Pan as we all know was born out of the drumming traditions “a calling of the ancestors”, “spiritual enlightenment” as you call it. The drummer in the earlier days was the one who was the medium that was used to communicate that spiritual force. They understood the power they controlled through their hands.
In the context of the Panorama, which I believe most people see the Pan; it’s not a true representation of the Pan and all of its potential or glory. That’s because, we do not promote Pan in the Classics/Music Festivals, Pan Jazz concerts that celebrate their discipline, style and beauty, remember Pan Concerts in the Hollows. I’m sure some of us want to go back to those days, the reality is time changes and so do we.
Panorama in its present form may have contributed to this perception of a circus/mockery and dance, but that’s what panorama is all about. If you want to change perception, bring back the Music festival, Pan Jazz, Ramajay, Pan in the 21st Century or a new and improved Panorama with a format for foreign consumption, “watered down versions”, “coasting” as we know it, of the Panorama selections, this can be a separate competition annually. I’m sure a different picture of the pan will emerge. A new Pan product also.
N.B. COASTING: The art of playing steel band music at reduced tempo.
LMJ, It is not so much the playing of the instrument but the music that comes from it that makes them dance, it's "D Jumbie"
