The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Organization of Pennsylvania portrayed its culture through music, song and dance on May 15. The occasion was the group’s 19th annual tea party held at The Holy Apostles & The Mediator Church at 51st and Spruce streets in Philadelphia.
The steel pan rhythms by Patrick Davis created such an island ambiance that attendees could not help but sway across the room as they took their seats.
The United Vincie Cultural Group of Brooklyn traveled from New York to Philadelphia to offer support to its sister organization, the SVGOP, with renditions of cultural favorites. The performance of “Chatoyer,” a play written by Ada Johnson, re-enacted the 1772 Garifuna rebellion that was led by Joseph Chatoyer, a national hero of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, an island chain of about 100,000 people located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea.
