A U.S. jazz fusion group will perform around the country next month as part of the American Music Abroad program, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) announced Thursday.
The Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is scheduled to bring its steelpan jazz music to Taipei, New Taipei, Yilan, Hualien and Taitung between Feb. 9 and 15, the AIT said in a statement.
The group's appearances, organized in partnership with local governments' cultural affairs departments, will comprise three free public concerts and other cultural exchange activities.
In addition to the public performances, the band will perform a pop-up show on Feb. 9 from 6 to 6:40 p.m. outside Taipei's Zhongshan MRT Station.
Local groups, including Voice Travelers, A Root Yilan and the Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe, will join the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra on stage at various concerts as they tour Taiwan.
The Fourchestra's visit to Taiwan is part of the 2017 American Music Abroad program, which is co-organized by American Voices, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the American Institute in Taiwan.
American Music Abroad is a people-to-people cultural exchange program designed to communicate America's rich musical contributions and diverse culture to the world.
The Jonathan Scales Fourchestra was selected to serve as cultural ambassadors for this year's program, which will also take them to China, Hong Kong and Indonesia.

That's because those visionaries at Pan Trinbago don't have a PLAN to identify and cultivate those players who have the potential to becoming GENIUS. Panorama is all they can focus on, limited vision for a Cultural organization who's main function seems to be Event planning. The managerial skills required to stage competitions with a focus on identifying skill-sets is not within their forte'.
We used to have the Pan Ramajay, Steelband Music Festival with their Pan Soloist competitions all part of the year round activities for PAN, some of which helped us discover Ray Holman, Boogsie Sharpe, Professor, Liam Teague, Mia Gormandy and the many others who never achieve international status but we've know some of their names.
So many unknown youngsters in the Panyards and schools just waiting for an opportunity to showcase the skills and talents. I'm sure not every one will be given a scholarship to NIU but a least we'll get to know their names. The talent is there just waiting to be discovered. There's a saying we only use 20% of our mental faculties the other 80% is left undiscovered/underutilized. If we can give opportunities to those who are hungry and teach them how to achieve their fullest potential, T&T and the Panyards will profit enormously from a business stand-point.
Liam Teague - Visit to Hell
Mia Gormandy - Flight Of The Bumble Bee
... and where are all these GENIUS PAN PLAYERS from Trinidad allyuh always trying to convince me about in this picture?
