Is it because EXPATS have taken the PAN to almost every imaginable corner of the world (well not quite every corner) and the novelty has worn off? Part of the ISF agenda is to get BANDS TOURING again and PAN MEN performing on International Stages -- is that an achievable goal in today's PAN SATURATED world? I will always believe that getting some DECENT PAN MUSIC out there is the most sensible agenda to create a NEW BUZZ around the INSTRUMENT. But people come and tell me that RADIO DEAD and CD DEAD (which I think is nonsense) -- well, RIDE whatever is the latest delivery system. Because I know ONE thing: People LISTENING TO MUSIC eh DEAD!!!

  • Steel band instruments are trans generational so it has appeal to a new generation that was not around

three or four generations ago. With the progressive music delivery channels of our time we are to adapt

to the new normal and market our product for a global audience to earn the millennial listenership.

Herein lies the partnership role of our governmental embassies across the globe in seeking out opportunities

and forums for enhanced global exposure to recent and current generations, coupled with the on going commitment of Pannists who continually seek to further refine our cultural art form. With this paradigm shift of collaborative efforts could

infuse some sustainability in the international musical arena for our future generations.

    Foreign National, Dr. Jawad..

    • Well said!  The public no longer views this as a curious and odd musical instrument, but it still blows the minds of the audience when a performance goes down.  In fact, the novelty has gained normalcy as it expands its acceptance.  There is a lot more the private sector along with governmental agencies and Pan Trinbago can do to increase that effort at home and abroad to support the new generation of enthusiastic panists.

      • Totally agree. "With the progressive music delivery channels of our time we are to adapt

to the new normal and market our product for a global audience to earn the millennial listenership."

There’s a lack of training/study when it comes to exploiting the resources available that can make the music accessible.

        • Well, THE BIG 5 has positioned itself to bring all contributors and supporters and PAN LOVERS and IDEAS PEOPLE under ONE BIG UMBRELLA. This is the chance for the GLOBAL NETWORK of PAN PEOPLE to come to the front and GET INTO THE MIX.

We have to go from the GENERAL TERMS to SPECIFIC IDEAS!!!

          • Good idea.  Pan certainly needs to coalesce behind any movement to Do Something For Pan.

It was back in Montreal at Expo 67 where T&T showcased  steelpan to the world as we helped Canada celebrate 100 years.  Remnants of The Combined Forces/Triopli steelband hung around as the Trinidad Playboys.  If I remember well they also headed down to Toronto to help celebrate Caribana 67.

Well roll forward to 2017, Wendy Jones (Pan Fantasy) and Earl La Pierre Jr (Afro Pan) assembled 150 Panist to help with Canada 150 Day Celebrations in T.O. (4:11:01~4;13:01)

These bands have toured Canada, USA and the world and always well received by the audience in attendance.

  • All I know is Salo and TASSO need support as they busy representin' steel, they tourin' steel and they jammin' steel...

  • Bold question, but here is my two pennies. Cost, poor marketing by the bands, lack of government mandated programs, not thinking outside the box vision seem unable to go past panorama.

What exactly are the bands doing to market themselves. who is planning the next Africa, Europe, Central America tour, who is sponsoring the flight and who in those countries are making arrangements by promoting and selling the events there.
Who here has those abilities and are willing to assist the bands in making these ventures possible. This my friends really takes a Village and together we can do it. lets answer the question by getting more involved. Here in Boston i am working on an annual Educational Steeplan Project and one of the key feature is to bring one of the panorama bands here to play for a week.// Michael C. • Michael, hope this information helps or point you in the right direction. Team-work in the Village.

We have XPATS and LOCALS 4 Pan who are members of the forum. Here’s someone in Boston I believe my be willing to offer assistance. Lynette Laveau a Media Arts Entrepreneur, in her own words. “I have presented the T&T performance segments a few times on my TV show and many people are delightfully astounded and appreciative at being introduced to the rich variety of art, culture, talent and fresh entertainment that abounds in T&T, which in the 21st century is still an open secret and undiscovered treasure to many despite the presence of the Internet and Youtube.”

  • A few years ago I visited with a friend and family in a small town  ( a village actually ) in Upstate New York called Silver Creek, an area where it is rare to see a person of color.

This is close to Lake Erie and among the activities at Lakeside that summer day was a pretty good local school steelband , made up of teenage kids.

You can find small steelbands in some of the unlikeliest places in the US

It occurred to me that the novelty of steelbands have long been lost even in areas distant from the Caribbean diaspora , and steelbands no longer have that "wow" factor as in years gone by.

For a touring steelband to have a significant impact as in days past , it would have to be something special ,maybe almost a panorama size band for impact; and of course logistics will make this extremely difficult , if not impossible.

I should mention that in the controversial Anthony Bourdain program , he did mention that he had seen steelband's before , but had not experienced anything like Phase II's size and power.

    I certainly got his point.
