  • “Each Steel band should begin to take its individual steps to reorganize itself to leverage its strengths so that it presents a viable option to the market that is willing to pay for steel band music. There is a space for steel and music but I hasten to add that that market is primarily outside of Trinidad and Tobago.”

The new marketplace can be created from the Panyards, with the advancement of new technologies their music can be accessed globally without third-party expenses.  The younger pan musicians, with the help of their management can seize on these opportunities and create products for their bands earnings.  The Junior Panorama has not been promoted and given the global exposure that will showcase their talents and skills. They are the future of the steelband movement.

YouTube is creating young millionaires who are creating products for their user’s consumption.  Teenagers are creating their own channels and monetizing their work. There’s a growing marketplace where teenagers using the new technologies, creating their music videos, producing their own gaming videos. Major companies in the gaming industry are staging competitions where kids are competing for six figure earnings.  Google’s YouTube, Game sites, FB and others are making billions off their growing customer's appeal from all across the globe. We must be willing to outgrow what no longer fits.

  • He also said that Pan Trinbago had relatively limited opportunities to earn money on its own, but was working on business plans and had started putting things in place.

However, attempts to probe further into these activities and why Pan Trinbago continues to function unprofitably was met with hostility from Diaz, who threatened to end the interview, if it continued in that vein.

    • Keith Diaz is incapable of leading Pan Trinbago in any commercial ventures that will ensure that the organization realizes any profit associated with Carnival. Each Steel band should begin to take its individual steps to reorganize itself to leverage its strengths so that it presents a viable option to the market that is willing to pay for steel band music. There is a space for steel and music but I hasten to add that that market is primarily outside of Trinidad and Tobago.

Pan Trinbago must be reoriented as an enabling body to open doors for Trinidad and Tobago steel bands.

After 2017 no more subventions should be released to Pan Trinbago and competitions must end. Competitions do not aid in product development or market penetration and create a false sense of reality that pan is relevant. Pan is only relevant if people can pay for it. How could this be achieved? This is the question that should be occupying the minds of pan men and anyone holding office in Pan Trinbago.

On the issue of relevance it is patently clear that the annual Panorama Competition has lost its appeal and has consistently attracted an older audience. The loyalists are growing older and Panorama's share of the Carnival revenue is shrinking. The death blow was the double whammy of the Greens and allowing bands to play old calypsoes. Time to scrap it.
      • You made my day Mr. Lance Dowrich!!!

I especially like your line: "There is a space for steel and music but I hasten to add that that market is primarily outside of Trinidad and Tobago."

Lord knows how many times I have tried to deliver that message on this forum!!!

        • Good post Lance Dowrich. Diaz era done....

    • Bugs, that’s TALK to impress. The man has been in charge of PT for how long? Did he bamboozle people to get elected? Plans what Plans? He’s supposed to be resting on doctor’s orders.  It could be that morning he forgot to take his meds. Every need has an ego to feed.

      • The government can remain one of the primary drivers for pan but only in Panorama the carnival event. Pan Trinbago does not own Panorama, the government does through the NCC. The funds should no longer go to Pan Trinbago directly but remain with NCC. The monies should be spent for direct expediture supported by invoices and contracts. Nothing should be placed into the hands of Pan Trinbago. PT can them be revamped constitutionally to act not as an Act of Parliament but as a profitabl company to which the share holders are the steelbands themselves and pan players and supporters of pan worldwide. It should be run not by pan players but professionally trained managers globally. It can then use the WWW to raise funds via shares. It should be and IBC (International Business Corporation public company. From th efunds of the company they can run any event besides Panorama in T&T which should remain with the government via NCC. The new pan organization whatever the new name can help both the steelbands to cover costs and pay pan players when events are met. It should be a promotor of steelbands in a true sense. That requires large sums of money coming internatiobnally. In this way T&T can recover the lost rights of the pan instruments. But it must not go into the hands of a few. Professional salries can be paid but it should not cross a stipulated amount per year. All these can now be created and remodeled as the Minister rightly suggest. The governmnet cannot pay the largeste part of the maintenanc of the pan culture. That we the tax payers have done sufficiently in over 70 years of the pan. It should be allowed to fly on its own now. This tells the intelligent why peopple like Diaz wants to be the board member for a long time.

        • A useful roadmap for the way forward.

One small correction: the rights were not lost-The price Whitmyre Patent Application lapsed before it could be approved, so, pan safe for now. PT could have stopped the original application with an e-mail  objection and US$ 50 fee- it would not have been difficult, complicated or expensive but it wasn't done.

Hopefully all future inventions, however small , will be registered internationally with the US and other relevant patent authorities, as Tony Walcott did with his.
