Length of Skirting on a Steelpan ?

Hi there, my name's Cyrus, and I wonder if you some of you guys being experts in the field of Steelpans could help me, as I am clueless!!! I am participating in an instrument workshop and have a couple of questions. 1. If you took off the skirt of the steelpan, leaving only the steel bowl with the hammered notes, would these notes still sound?? I have read online that the shorter the skirt , the higher pitched drum it is. But if there was no skirt , would any notes sound ? What if it was , say , about an inch or two ? 2. My steelpan is very rusty. What would you suggest is the best way to remove this rust? Would using a chemical based rust remover be safe?? Thanks for all your help. Spirits of steel! -Cyrus

    • Hiya, thanks for the reply, and the link.

That's great to know that the skirt is mainly for loudness. I'll be cutting off its skirt pronto, I hope nobody will think it too rude that my drum is naked : ) !!

      All the best

  • the length of shirting does have an effect as to loudness cutting under 3 inches should be done by a tunner who will know how to do so .use 'sprits of salts' this is a very strong acid so be careful wear something over your nose ,but it will get rid of all rust fast
    • all your comments have filled my life with boundless joys . Thank you !
