Hi there, my name's Cyrus, and I wonder if you some of you guys being experts in the field of Steelpans could help me, as I am clueless!!! I am participating in an instrument workshop and have a couple of questions.
1. If you took off the skirt of the steelpan, leaving only the steel bowl with the hammered notes, would these notes still sound?? I have read online that the shorter the skirt , the higher pitched drum it is. But if there was no skirt , would any notes sound ? What if it was , say , about an inch or two ?
2. My steelpan is very rusty. What would you suggest is the best way to remove this rust? Would using a chemical based rust remover be safe??
Thanks for all your help. Spirits of steel!

That's great to know that the skirt is mainly for loudness. I'll be cutting off its skirt pronto, I hope nobody will think it too rude that my drum is naked : ) !!
the length of shirting does have an effect as to loudness cutting under 3 inches should be done by a tunner who will know how to do so .use 'sprits of salts' this is a very strong acid so be careful wear something over your nose ,but it will get rid of all rust fast
