An Edmonds man fell in love with the melodic music of steel pan bands at the age of 10, and now he’s set his sights on bringing a world-class steel band to Edmonds.
As a boy, Gary Gibson stood in the crowds at a Thanksgiving Day parade and watched as a corps of Navy men passed in dress blues drumming on steel pans strapped to their chests.
Gibson – inspired by the US Navy Steel Band – rushed home, grabbed an old bowl-shaped metal sled and created his own “pan.”
At 54, he continues to play, and his passion for steel pan music has led him not only to teaching, but also to the founding of a non-profit called Steel Magic Northwest.
