Mark Loquan on Pat Bishop

Global - It is with a heavy heart that I write of Pat Bishop’s passing, as she is someone that became a true and close friend of mine over the last decade, short by comparison to many others. But she touched my life. She was my mentor and an authentic champion, not only of our culture, but as someone trying to preserve the identity of Trinidad and Tobago as our society became more fragmented, more globalized, more foreign.

I first met her around 1996 or 1997 after approaching this giant of the arts to do a simple song in her choir, the Lydians. I was daunted. She did not say no and never did, but I could see her bewilderment and curiosity. Several years later her choir and steel ensemble would be performing “Hooked” and “Colours Again” which were performed in the National Music Festivals and at the COTT Awards in 2006, which is featured on Pan in Education 2.
