Member of Parliament for Port of Spain South Marlene Mcdonald has shot down a request for pan yards to be given bar licenses.

The call came from Pan-Trinbago president Keith Diaz, who believes bar licences could help pan yards become less dependent on government funding.

But Mcdonald told Diaz to come up with a better plan.

  • Mr. claude we miss this one man...... I looking for the article "drink a beer syndrome" help me because silly season start.....

  • Don’t blame Diaz. Drink a beer syndrome determines our president...

  • Ok guys , another suggestion of "another way",

As we know , steelband loyalty is a lifelong thing , and has followed many of us to "foreign",

Suppose Pantrinbago was to arrange a way for Trinidad steelband t-shirts to be available in places like New York , Toronto and London, (at  reasonable cost ) from top Trinidad steelbands , do you think they would sell ?

I'm pretty sure that many of us would love to sport our favorite steelbands t-shirts at Caribana , Notting Hill , or Labor day.

And you can get printers in the US and other places to print band logos for reasonable cost , so they won't have to be shipped from Trini.

You could also sell them on the road on festival day . and if you really want the Trini market , any roti shop in foreign will do :).

(And please I eh going to Trini in de near future , so someone hook me up with a All Stars t-shirt please ? And ah still looking for a Southern Marines shirt from Marabella)

    • Glenroy, a few years ago I tried marketing T-shirts from Trinidad and ran into problems because copies are readily available. Each Steel Band having its own website promoting their music and memorabilia is a good idea but takes time to develop. Giving Steel Bands Liquor permits with the same requirements as Bars and Fetes will go a long way to help them financially. Visitors to Pan Yards bring coolers with alcoholic beverages in their car trunks and consume alcohol in the Pan Yard so what is the big deal. Grant the bands liquor permits just like organizers of parties or dances.

      • Lennox Morris , I was thinking more of the steelband organization promoting such an avenue for all steelbands.

I'm sure such a project can be accomplished far easier by PanTrinbago on behalf of all bands , instead of by an individual or by a single steelband.

        • Glenroy, I agree that the Association would be the best Forum to undertake this and it will take time and assistance to be successful. But what is happening now is immediate and could help the Steel Bands immediately. If Gov't does not have the money to give more assistance then give the Steel Bands the means of earning the money. A helping hand is not a hand out.

        • Yes, Glenroy!!!

          www.steelbandsbazaar.com

          one central shop!!!

  • BTW , people IMHO steelband music hasn't really changed that much over the last three decades or so , with the exception of those sometimes over-arranged panorama tunes that has become the standard fare for steelbands today.

But fortunately , there is a plethora of quality pan music going back to bands like Tripoli and Harmonites from the 1970's.

Much of this music can easily ( and cheaply)be repackaged and sold, digitally or by cds , if we can create a market for pan music.

Unfortunately such a market does not exist around the world ,  and we make no effort to create one thinking , in typical Trini fashion , that a market will create itself " Just so",

    • Glenroy: To prove your point I will tell you a story that I am sure you have experienced yourself. A few years ago I was searching the internet for TRINIDAD CHOCOLATE (Since we have the best cocoa in the world -- they say). So I ran into a chocolate shop in Maryland that was selling "Trinidad Chocolate" and I ordered a box. As we all know TRINIDAD means TRINITY so the label may not have had anything to do with Trinidad. Anyway, I got the chocolate and it was not that good, so I never ordered any more. But here is the kicker!!!! Every month for the past number of years I get an email from that chocolate company offering specials or introducing new products -- like it or not.

Where is PAN MUSIC in this marketing process????????? MILES BEHIND. Like you said, if we think and talk about it, it will create itself "JUST SO".
