First lady Michelle Obama honors Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra cellist Malik Johnson and Executive Director Linda Edelstein at the White House on Tuesday.

The difficult thing about doing your job well for a long period of time is that people tend to take you for granted.

The Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra is in just such a situation, or at least it was before last week, when first lady Michelle Obama presented MYSO Executive Director Linda Edelstein and student cellist Malik Johnson with a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program award and a couple of hugs at the White House.

MYSO, founded in 1956 and once known as Music for Youth, is a collection of 25 performing programs and 39 study options for young musicians of grade school and high school age. The organization's ensembles include orchestras, a wind ensemble, a brass ensemble, jazz studies and ensembles, flute choirs and a steel pan band.
