When Steel Talks extends condolences to the family and friends of musicologist, recording artist, band leader, composer and author extraordinaire Aldwin Albino.
On Thursday, September 12, 2019, Aldwin Gilbert Albino passed away peacefully at the age of 84. Born on September 1 1935 in Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago. Aldwin was a renowned pianist and teacher who touched the lives of many people. He leaves behind four children, Aldwin Jr., Liesel, Mishell (Eddy) and Tony (Julie) four grandchildren, Jordan, Austin, Ryan and Dakota. He will be missed by his siblings Martin (Bernadette) and Merle, his nephews, Michael, Richard and Jason (Paola and Nora).
"His visionary stance enabled lower class students to excel academically and to accept themselves, while helping upper class members of society to envision the prominent role that Trinidad could later play on the world stage because of the very steel drum that they initially dismissed as vulgar.
He has released three recordings of calypso music played classically. Reaction to these projects ranged from utter consternation to unabashed approval. Aldwin was again "teaching" through music.
Albino has been a sought after musician, arranger, teacher, and musical director for radio, television shows both in his native Trinidad and North America. Many accolades have been bestowed upon him including the Martin Luther King award for his contribution to the arts in Canada, and the Trinidad and Tobago award for the arts in New York, U.S.A. Throughout it all he has guided and shaped young minds in the schools of Trinidad and Montreal by skillfully bringing music into his academic programs. Proof of the effectiveness of his approach is evident in the fact that many prominent scholars and performers acknowledge his influence.". The Music of "Mang

My sister Cynthia, who lives in Montreal, gifted me a copy of Aldwin Albino's classical tribute to Lord Kitchener in the 1990s. I was impressed to the point that I knew I had to present Albino's CD as a live performance in Brooklyn. I had introduced "Caribbean Jazz" as a regular feature in my New York concert productions over the years with luminaries such as Jamaica's Ernie Ranglin and Monty Alexander, Trinidad and Tobago's Raf Robertson, David 'Happy' Williams, Robert Greenidge, the return of Ann Marie Inniss, and Mavis John in her first New York performance as it was for panist Liam Teague, and Barbados' Arturo Tappin. The venue for Albino's New York debut was Brooklyn's Africa House, a popular basement club in Flatbush. And then came the matter of getting a grand piano down two flights of narrow, winding stairs for the show. There could be no other way to do right by Albino and the classics. For the piano movers it was a logistical nightmare, but for patrons, a Sunday to remember. Aldwin, obvously delighted with the reception from Brooklyn fans, would later write of the experience in his autobiography "Music from the Mang." I woke this morning to the news of his passing after seeing his name earlier in the week in a discussion on When Steel Talks. Life, boy. Rest in Peace, Aldwin.
