  • Bede, that was the correct name and Silver Stars really had the best version. Some other band tried but it was more of a "red man" Lol

    • The name of the Kitchener calypso was "Don't Come back again, niggerman". We weren't as PC back then.

I must also mention the fact that the TASPO album had a tune on it called "Coolie Man's House"

If you notice when I posted the album I didn't list names of the tunes.

I thought about it and decided not to, partly because of political correctness.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that, but since the subject came up, ............

      • Glen, I really cannot say that I remember the name of the tune, But as soon as Cecil mentioned it I was able to but notes to it without hearing it, because I had played it before and never paid attention to the name.

  • GRJ I spoke of the Bomb Tunes played by Sundowners and Cavaliers back then a few days ago.Bede asked for Great Classical Pieces so that's a Brain Teaser for me . There were many lovely Bombs played in Sando but remember we did not have the Media coverage that the North Bands had so with no recordings I was not in a position to hear many of the Bands on the Radio and remember I would have been in my Band from Jouvert to Last Lap . 2 other Bombs that I can remember which probably can be called  Classics were Cavaliers " Tzina Tzina" and Fonclaire's " Alla Turca " and they were also winners . What I can remember about your Band "Silver Tones "was their Wonderful Arrangement of  Kitch's " Miss Tourist" in 1968 with that Lovely Intro and all those Sweet Pans that you guys had . I can easily say they were the Very Best at that time . Thanks .

    • Thank you Steve for backing me up. You are right, if you were a panist back then for the most part you didn't get to hear what other steel bands were playing, and they weren't recorded, but I also remember Cavaliers created some excitement with Bobby Mohammed's arrangement of "Kiss of Fire".

The year Southern Marines clashed with Gondoliers,(1963), we had won the steel band competition( an early south panorama) in Naparima Bowl  with Lord Kitchener's "The Road," and our bomb tune which was being played when the steelbands clashed was  Handel's "Largo".

I also remember Marines going into Sando beating tunes like Bert Kaempfert's 1960 instrumental hit "Wonderland by Night" in '61 and the military march "Men of Harlech".

And thanks for your plug for my other band Silvertones.

That was a great year for us,  Miss.Tourist was a fine arrangement by Kenrick "Kicker" George, sweet pans from Errol Moore an Allan Gervais, and some of the best six bass players I've ever seen.

BTW, when my Marabella band Scarlet Symphony broke up, I wanted to join a Sando band and I decided between two bands, Silvertones and Fonclaire. I chose the band that I thought was the better band at that time.

      It was Silvertones.

      • The best "MS Tourist" was by Silver Stars, You hear dar second pan solo?

        • Can't argue, since we only made it to the semifinals  :)

          • "Doh come back again nigger man" is the best panorama tune Junior did. Back in the day we said after Junior finish with "nigger man" he was not sounding like a nigger anymore. LMAO!

            •  C C C C B, G B D, C A F D G, C E G C B, G B D, C A F D G, G F E F G F E F, G A,

               B A B A G, G F E F G F E F, G A ,A C C B A B B C.

I REMEMBER THAT TUNE, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER IF THAT WAS THE CORRECT NAME, LOL, (but i had like miss tourist)
