New group awards first large-impact grant

Women in Philanthropy aids BGCBR’s steel drum band
Virginia, USA - The founding members of Women In Philanthropy, an initiative of the Martinsville Area Community Foundation, awarded their first large-impact grant at a luncheon Thursday at the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

The grant of $27,000 was awarded to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge for its steel drum orchestra program.

....The grant money will be used to buy instruments, pay instructor Shawn Thwaites of Fieldale and offer public performances and education, she said. The group will have used instruments to start but will order a $17,000 complete orchestra set, she added.
