New York, USA - Horace Morancie, one of the city's most powerful activists in the 1960s, died Wednesday of natural causes, his family said. He was 85.
Morancie, born in Trinidad and Tobago, came to New York in 1954 when he was 25.
An outspoken community activist, he helped lead the Great Society and War on Poverty program that created hundreds of jobs in Brooklyn.
Morancie was appointed by Mayor John Lindsay to run Brooklyn's Model Cities Program and brought millions of dollars to the borough.
He helped develop and manage a comprehensive plan for housing, sanitation, crime prevention, police protection, economic development, education, social services, union organization and transportation.
