Revisited -- New York Steelband Organizations Sandbagged!

Panorama Promoters say - No money for you!

In a move that only a Bernard “Bernie” Madoff, Al Capone, or recently convicted felon, former New York police commissioner Bernard “Bernie” Kerik and /or the other Wall Street notorious corporate thugs, would have the audacity to pull-off in broad daylight - New York steelband panorama 2009 participants were told they would not be getting paid some two and a half months after they performed at a jammed-packed event. The event, held by WIADCA (West Indian America Day Carnival Association), had thousands of attendees paying premium dollars. Annually, the NYC panorama is the biggest event draw during the Labor Day Carnival festivities held behind the Brooklyn Museum.

NYC’s steelband music organizations have long held the steadfast belief that WIADCA was robbing them deaf, dumb and blind over the decades; however this latest slap has added a new chapter to strange and economically abusive relations between the NYC steelpan musicians and the event promoters WIADCA. Indeed, WIADCA has been living in a Gangstas’ Paradise according to the NYC’s steelband management personnel who spoke to When Steel Talks (WST). Moreover they found it incredible that WIADCA publicly declared in a meeting with steelband management that it would not be paying bands prize winnings et al. This is despite, band managements say, the clearinghouse of hundreds of thousand of dollars in cash via gate receipts and lucrative beverage and liquor sales from the Bar - on the panorama event night itself; they refuse to believe all that income has simply vanished.

may be now is the time for the steel bands to make a move
and get WIADCA to open those books
There is something fundamentally wrong here. What exactly did the bands agree to? What does their contract say? Is it not fraudulent for WIADCA to hold a competition without the prize money in escrow?

bugs
If this is true...I have to agree with you bugs..."what does the contract say?" Maybe, WIADCA are exercising a right they've had all along and chose not to use until now?
Seems to me that WIADCA is saying to the New York Steelband Organizations..... You could jump up and down and make all the fuss that you you want. The bottom line is, you are not getting any money and there aint a damn thing you could do about it. Talk about no respect. That is the age old problem plaguing the steelband movement since its inception. I'll be watching to see what happens with this fiasco.
Talking about steelband organizations - isn't USSA, the united states steelband association, still around? Doesn't ussa represent the new york steel orchestras? Has anybody heard from the association on this? Is it investigating on behalf of the bands? What about the USSA president, Anthony ike Hinds - what is his position on this "stiffing" of the bands in his organizations?
total BULLSHIT.

is what that is.

lyin ass mofo's
Lets keep it clean and control our language; we do not want WST to be fined.
oh sorry. didn't know that was an issue. but why would they be fined? ppl say badwud all the time on the www.

but anyway -- OK, point taken.
"This is despite, band managements say, the clearinghouse of hundreds of thousand of dollars in cash via gate receipts and lucrative beverage and liquor sales from the Bar - on the panorama event night itself; they refuse to believe all that income has simply vanished."

I'd like to add that they also receive huge sums of money from sponsors.
I'd like to add that they also receive huge sums of money from sponsors"

yah gp, the excuse is the sponsor money 'didn't come thru'.

but regardless, the cash intake on panorama night is big money. them can't tell me nothing like there's not enough to pay the bands. that is just complete bullshit.

i find the notion that it 'could have been in the contract' that the pan & mas bands don't get paid, utterly ludicrous. it makes no sense. not dissin anyone's opinion , just sayin a competition with prizes MUST have said prizes addressed in the contract.
THIS IS MY SUGGESTION:

If all this is true, why not setup something like a global "steel band union" where various steel band associations get together and boycott WIADCA for future panorama's...this is important because where there are unions, there is unity and if someone crosses a picket line, they are seriously punished and they are put on a blacklist that lasts years.

Any steel band that performs for WIADCA during a boycott, should be put on a blacklist, which means no tuner or arranger should work for that band except maybe their own local arranger. No pan builder should build new pans for them during the boycott and they should not be allowed to partake in band launchings, etc.

Bands have to stick together if we're going to have any impact with situations like this...eventually, I hope we put on our own Panorama...it was done before and it can be done again only much better...this is something I have been pushing for years at meetings, etc.

Should be interesting to see what develops.
This is very mind boggling to me. I really don't want to believe that this is true. Hoping that this is a rumor. This Kind of move for wiadca would be very detramental. I am going to sit back and watch how this plays out!
