The smooth sounds of steelbands will be making their festival debut next month.

Hosted at Auckland's Silo Park steelpan orchestras will be playing at the country's first steelband festival.  

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago the steelpan is a percussion instrument which was developed between 1880 to 1937.

The Carribeanz Southern Stars Steelband will be performing at New Zealand's first steelband festival.

Founded in 2005 New Zealand's first Caribbean orchestra The Carribeanz Southern Stars Steelband have been preparing for the festival.

Band manager Camille Nakhid said the band practised once a week and there were about 10 to 15 members.

Steelpans are made out of 55 gallon industrial drums that usually carry oil.

Between the group there were 14 sets of steelpans, Nakhid said. 

As a co-founder of the steelband Nakhid wanted to set the group up because she wanted to more Caribbean music represented in New Zealand, she said.

"It's good making people aware of music that originated in the Caribbean, that comes from the Caribbean and that you identify with people from the Caribbean," Nakhid said.

  • A few month back I raised the awareness of Steelpan down under, in my travels a few years back I meet a Trini in Brisbane Australia who is working tirelessly in keeping the Steelpan awareness down under, some on this forum may know him, see the photo, in front of a Government Building in Brisbane we spent the afternoon reminiscing and answering folks questions on the instrument
