NIU Steelband concert features virtuoso

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University Steelband Spring Concert at 3 p.m. April 22 will feature an eclectic blend of music styles and a special guest artist.

The band, under the direction of Liam Teague, NIU professor of music and director of steelpan studies, and assisted by the School of Music’s Yuko Asada, will be joined by steelpan virtuoso Victor Provost.

Provost is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading voices on the steelpan.

He is an adjunct professor of music at George Mason University and conducts residencies and master classes throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean.

In addition to leading his own group, Provost tours with NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera, is a member of the Grammy award-winning Afro Bop Alliance, and works with several of the mid-Atlantic region’s most lauded musical collectives.

The free concert will take place in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building, 550 Lucinda Ave. in DeKalb.
