‘Back to Carnival’s roots’ Matthew Philip, Director of the Trust, who leads the Mangrove Steelband and manages the Tabernacle events space in Notting Hill, told i: “We’re taking Carnival back to its roots. Carnival was born out of local community expression of freedom, rather than an advertising opportunity for brands and companies.”
Last year, Carnival marketed itself to sponsors such as Red Bull as a vehicle to “launch promotion of products, especially to the 18-34 age group… With a range of options to suit every brand.”
Mr Philip, who attended his first Carnival aged seven, said: “We need a certain amount of finances but we have to create a balance so it doesn’t turn into a big corporate event.”
