During what could be a magical season for the Chicago Cubs, the students of one Oak Park school are sending their support to the team through a music video.

Hatch Elementary School's steel drum band, which is made up of 80 fourth- and fifth-grade students, created their own "Go, Cubs, Go" music video to cheer the team on during the postseason.

"The timing was really nice because they won last night," Jacobson said Wednesday. "I showed the kids the video [Tuesday], and they felt really proud to be in something cheering for the Cubs."

Filmmakers Risé Sanders-Weir and her husband Drew Weir, parents of a Hatch student, produced and shot the video at school on Oct. 7.

"A lot of work went into it," Jacobson said. "First was just learning the song, and then we had all the kids who wanted to be a part of it come in after school to shoot at a couple different locations. We got them singing and cheering in the hall and spelling out 'Go Cubs' outside."

While not common amongst schools in Illinois, Jacobson founded the school's Conga Club five years ago. One year later, the group acquired some steel drums and was renamed the Steel Drum Band. "I caught wind that there were some instruments that the school hadn't used in a while, and I kind of made it my business to start work on the steel band," Jacobson said. "We started out with six kids. We started using the steel drums in the music program, and the band started to grow." With Chicago caught up in Cubs playoff fever, Jacobson turned to his father Paul, a retired music teacher who worked at Oak Park's Lincoln Elementary School for 30 years, for a little help. "My dad is retired, and he co-directs the group with me," Jacobson said. "We were listening to 'Go, Cubs, Go' together, and he went home and put together the arrangement for it. You can take any song from classical orchestra to pop to 'Go, Cubs, Go' and it will translate into the steel drum. That's not something everybody sees, and I want to make sure I'm sharing that."
