Pan Players Dissed by “Excellence in Steel” Committee Chair in Panorama Program Booklet?

Below is a direct quote from page 2 of the program booklet:

Failure is lack of success of the pannist in a pan competition, ie, they fail to examine the nature of their problems. In an act of competing rivalry may be very tough and the coveted prize always goes to the best playing band. They are judged by what they do and not by what they believe – there are very small credit for the pannist vision.

Failure is the belief that the pannist has to find out why they have failed. The unfortunate aspect of the pannist is good habits are more easier to give up that the bad ones.

The pannist always believe when he/she enters a pan competition the tune they have selected cannot loose. However, in many cases that may not be the case because in a steelband competition the quality of Pan music may be very high an vying for honors among the other bands is a win or lose situation, especially when the battle for the supersonic sound of music is entailed by avengers.

The marvelous richness of the pannist experience is to lose something of a rewarding joy, if there were no limitations to overcome.

Time is a merciless thing, therefore life is a process of burning oneself out the spirit of man is good in many cases: he display the act of God, kindness and not to harm others,

It is an unsound argument false ideas and beliefs. In order to overcome such situations, the following should be implemented: respect your efforts, respect yourself because respect leads to discipline. When these areas are under control that will be a sign of togetherness between pannist and leaders.

The fallacy of the pannist is and unsound argument, false beliefs and ideas. In an attempt to remove such mitigating circumstances the pannist and the band leaders got to respect one’s efforts and themselves, which will lead to discipline among the parties.

Such procedure if adopted could keep the steelband fraternity together.

Oh, what astonishing power a large body of men/women (pannist) can put forth when they work at the same task and are greatly interested in it, they begin the same process but such process differentiates and improves by their hands, when playing the pan instruments; each gain skill and they learn for each other.

I could be seriously incorrect, so I am withhold my comments until I get some feedback from the WST community.

Perhaps if they shared the actual scoring guidelines (what the points are worth and what the categories) maybe the bands and individual players could adjust their playing style to fit the expectations. The scoresheets are not posted anywhere online. The bands don't get them back to review the feedback. The competition is bush league when compared to other legitimate competitions. How can anyone improve without specific feedback? The stuff on page 2 is absolute gibberish.

The judging criteria was included on page 5 of the program. One would hope that those criteria were provided to steelbands beforehand. They are similar (though less detailed) to those used for panorama in TT.

Where can I get a copy if the program? Could you post page 5 so
I could see the judging criteria? Thank you.

This is total nonsense. Did USSA approve this?

@bugs - is USSA even a factor? Do they serve any purpose?

Bugs boy...I read it…tried real hard…but after reading it a few times I still don't understand it…I am tempted to comment but none of it makes even a little sense...better allyuh than me

merrytones: I could explain it all to you but we will have to sit down face to face and you will have to promise me not to bus meh head with ah bottle. And since I eh never coming back to Trinidad it will have to be on NEUTRAL GROUNDS ... Moscow, perhaps?

Time is a merciless thing, therefore life is a process of burning oneself out the spirit of man is good in many cases: he display the act of God, kindness and not to harm others,….

Since yuh so good…explain that?…lol

That is what ah telling yuh!!! We have to sit down face to face with plenty time and liquor and two sticks ah TAMPEE (although ah doh smoke) and I will explain it all to you!!! In essence, I don't want to cut down the man who wrote that page.

I will give you a hint: The man who put up this post (who I have always absolutely respected on this forum and will always defer to) is an EXCEPTION TO THE RULE. Think about that!!!

Sometimes you hear that a man is given a life sentence for killing his wife (except in Trinidad where you could kill as many people as you want and never go to prison) and you say that the man is now 35 years old and he has been given a life sentence in prison. Well, when you are born into this world -- you are also given a life sentence. Go to any graveyard and you will seen 1947-2016 or some such numbers. That man in that grave was given a LIFE SENTENCE on EARTH. How he spent it was his business -- dealing drugs, behind bars, educating himself, playing pan, betting horses and playing poker, operating on cancer patients in a hospital ... it's all just "serving the life sentence" as a so-called FREE MAN..

KILLING TIME!!! Just like you are managing to do with your merrytones involvement in PAN.

So "time is a merciless thing" which you have to try to manage. Look at me wasting time on this forum arguing with a failed musical genre -- burning oneself [myself] out ...the little time I have left.

The intention of man on this planet as designed by GOD is to do good (the spirit of man is good in many cases  and he should display the act of god ... GOD meaning goodness and the kindness not to harm others -- in the fellahs words).

That is my explanation of the Page 2 or Page 5 message (since I did not read the program to report the exact page) of the life-long DEVOTEE TO PAN.

Give the fellah ah break because he does not have the literary skills to quite meet the forum standards. I am sure that he has promoted PAN more than all dem fellahs who writing all dem thesis on PAN.

Oh ho…so you is the author then?…Yuh coulda tell we dat all the time man…lol...

I totally agree with you, Merrytones...don't understand it either !
