Steelpan musicians battle for basketball supremacy on Sonatas’ Sports DayNew York, USA - Have you ever wondered - what does a world-class performing steel orchestra do when it is not performing, or readying itself for the next competition or performance?

On Saturday Sonatas held ‘Sports Day’ - an event conjured up, directed and managed by the young people of the organization. Not only was the event a great idea - but it was also a great experience. All there had a great time. Fun, food and music were the order of the day. Yes, there was healthy competition, but the day’s events fostered cooperation, camaraderie and respect among the youth of the various steelbands present.

Kudos to the Sonatas Organization. There is nothing like the family unit.
It is too bad that my fellow panmen from the 70's did not share my vision. Back in 1978, I suggested to my fellow panmen in Despers USA, (we were called Metro Steel then) I want to have a meeting with all the Steel Orchestras before that years Brooklyn Panorama. The agenda was, ''Collective Entrepreneurship." The concept is lets pool all of the panorama prize monies. Special Trophys will be given to the Ist, 2nd, 3rd and the also rans. A Committee will be made up from a member of each Steel Orchestra. We will then purchase a
"Building For Pan." Well! my idea did not reach any further, because the band thought that they had a good chance of winning, that 1978 Panorama, and saw a few cents then, when I was seeing hundreds of dollars down the Road. I then said, lets purchase the building we were occupying, that idea too was laughed at.
"NO ONE SHARED MY VISION." All the bands that existed in 1978 should have all own their own Pan Yards and Real Estate TODAY. In the 1990's I again tried with Despers USA to buy the land on Classon instead of renting, Well! should I continue!
In February of 2004, I personally contacted Yohan Popwell on my own about arranging for Despers USA, for the 2004 Labour Day Panorama. He was quite interested.
However, once more the powers that be did not see what I saw in Yohan.
By the way, who won the 2004 Labour Day Panorama? (LOL)

I have a 12 page booklet about the Brooklyn Panorama from 1972 to the Present. I hope that you all will retain a copy.
