Pan Trinbago is openly accusing the Government - via the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts and the National Carnival Commission - of trying a hostile takeover of their organisation and other stakeholder bodies on the eve of Carnival 2017.

Pan Trinbago officials made the claim in a press release yesterday, hours after meeting to discuss an announcement by Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly on Wednesday that Government plans to conduct a forensic audit of the body after Carnival. Pan Trinbago was said to be owing close to 31 million at the start of the year, according to NCC president Kenny De Silva.

In a strongly-worded release, Pan Trinbago PRO Michael Joseph said the Government and NCC were “hell bent on usurping the role of Pan Trinbago and the two other major interest groups (Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation and the National Carnival Bands Association) in the national festival and the authority given to them by acts of Parliament.”

Douglas: Lopez not fired as NCBA President

The Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, Dr. Lincoln Douglas, has clarified that the President of the National Carnival Bands Association was not fired from the NCBA, but removed from the Board of the National Carnival Commission (NCC).

The Minister clarified the issue on CTV's Good Morning T&T on Tuesday.

"Mr. Lopez is in no way removed as the President of the NCBA. What we are talking about here is the NCBA's nominee on the Board of Directors of the National Carnival Commission. The National Carnival Commission has oversight of all Carnival activities in Trinidad and Tobago."

The Minister also explained that the various Carnival interest groups like Pan Trinbago, TUCO and the NCBA have representatives on the Board of the National Carnival Commission and they have all been requested to submit a report about the aspects of Carnival under their management.

"Two of the Special Interest Groups responded, Pan Trinbago and TUCO, and the only one who didn't respond was the NCBA via Mr. Lopez. We wrote him a second time and said could you send the report and basically his response to that was that it's none of my business. In other words, he said this was confidential to the NCBA."
