Pan Trinbago’s Steelband Month continues with myriad events under the theme “Education, Development and Appreciation”, including “Defenders of the Pan — Bad John Day” and a seminar — Healthy Living.
Several other fringe activities hosted by the regions include bp Renegades Boat Ride VII and Pan Night (today and Friday), Northern Region’s “Back In Times” (today), “Skiffle in Concert” at Queen’s Hall (Saturday), and CAL Invaders Versatility Concert at NAPA, Port of Spain (August 22).
“Defenders of the Pan” comprising pan stalwarts reminiscing and sharing their experiences of the days of old, takes centre stage. Here the audience receives insights into the history, most of which is locked away in the minds of the diminishing few. This event is carded for Wednesday August 14 at the Renegades Pan Theatre, Charlotte Street, Port of Spain, from 7 p.m.
One of the new events is the Seminar on Healthy Living at the Port of Spain City Hall Auditorium, Knox Street, Port of Spain, at 8 a.m.
The next “big” event in the month long programme is Pan On De Avenue hosted by the Woodbrook Community Association and Councillor Cleveland Garcia. Approximately 30 steelbands will parade along Ariapita Avenue in a westerly direction from Colville Street to Taylor Street, Woodbrook, on Saturday August 24, from 5 p.m.
Last Sunday, members of the steelband association, friends and well wishers joined with the Pan Trinbago at an Inter-Faith Service and Blessing of the Flags at the St Joseph’s Convent Chapel in Port of Spain.
Other events listed are Melodians Steelband Anniversary, Bellamy Street, Arima (August 25); South Central Region’s Independence Dance on the eve of Independence at Palm’s Club, Pointe Pierre Road, San Fernando, with the second in the series of informative seminars, titled “Pan, Patent and Progress” at Nalis, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain on Friday August 30. Starting time is 1 p.m.
Carib Woodbrook Playboyz, White Oak Starlift and CAL Invaders will each be holding their annual Independence Day Brunch at their respective panyards on August 31.
The programme culminates on Sunday 1 September with an Independence Fiesta along Tragerate Road featuring Desperadoes, Invaders, Exodus, Phase II, Starlift and Renegades. This event starts at 4 p.m.
