Kirk Seetahal was the CEO of Spicemas Corporation (SMC), which is the Organization that runs Grenada Carnival.

From what I have gathered, last year (2017) the Grenada Panorama was cancelled while the Bands were literally lining up to enter the venue to the competition. It seems that Spicemas Corporation did not build a stage to host the competition.

Well boy, a Grenadian calypsonian did not take that too easily. This year, he sang one of the best and most craftily composed double entendre that I have ever heard in the modern era of Calypso.

Scholar loves Pum Pum | NOW Grenada

by Dr. Augustine Panchoo

I listened with a keen sense of appreciation to the recently released song rendered by Finlay “Scholar” Jeffrey and I must attest to the wonderful melody and creative lyrics as written and composed by Bryan Griffith and Finlay Jeffrey.

This song might be a contender for the Groovy or even Road March. In fact, this might be Scholar’s trump card to the Monarchy on Dimanche Gras night. There is no question that Scholar is amazing at what he does. His craft is unmatched in the modern calypso arena. His wit and lyrical content rise to the top in every competition. I salute you Finlay “Scholar” Jeffrey.

So why am I writing this?

I write because, I find the lyrics of this song to be irresponsible, intolerant, debasing, mean, bullish, antipathic, xenophobic, chauvinistic, and filled with prejudice, malice, and bigotry. The lyrics of this song will perpetrate a sense of hatred for a person or persons who do not share the same sexual preference or sexual orientation. The lyrics of this song seeks to debase, demean, dehumanise, and ostracise an individual because he shares an identity different from yours.

  • That one in not a challenge at all Mr. Cluade.

    the concept is not original.

  • I have always REJECTED CALYPSOS where the singer tried to "MOUTH" the sound of THE PAN. (I don't know why.)

Actually, after Lord Kitchener came back to TRINIDAD and sang "THE STEELBAND MUSIC IS VERY SWEET" (opening the floodgate) -- I basically rejected every "PAN SONG CALYPSO" (call it what you want) except for about TWO since then (and that is ah long time, eh). And every PANORAMA when I hear these CALYPSO "SINGERS" (the voices are so horrible, I have to put it in quotes) attempting to PRAISE THE PAN IN SONG (because they have no other material) and I am forced to listen to the first 30 seconds just because I am a CALYPSO LOVER above everything else -- it is quite nerve-racking. Lord, I went off on a tangent.

So let me get back to the PUM PUM subject!!!

Now, I have listened to PLENTY PLENTY CALYPSO in my life and I spent the WHOLE DAY trying to recall if I ever heard any CALYPSONIAN ever sing a calypso and try to recreate the sound of THE PAN with his MOUTH (I call it "MOUTHING") and used the words "PUM PUM" to simulate the SOUND OF THE PAN.

If any of the 18,000 readers on THIS FORUM could put up a CALYPSO like that -- I would like to hear it.

    • And from a technical standpoint - why the word "pum" can be associated with the sound of the pan.
