Panmen can’t get work

By JULIEN NEAVES Sunday, June 5 2016

A LACK of music literacy is hindering steelband arrangers from getting employment and has resulted in Panorama compositions not being recorded.

These were some of the concerns raised yesterday during the opening of the Music Room at the MIC Institute of Technology O’Meara Technology Centre in Arima.

Jessel Murray, University of the West Indies (UWI) senior lecturer and head of the Department for Creative and Festival Arts, in his remarks spoke about music literacy and how it impacts the people in the steelband movement.

“All musicians have to be musically literate,” he stressed.

He said for the past 30 years he has been pushing for pan players to be musically literate.

  • Typo: Where are the recordings going to take place ?
  • Question: Where is the Employment for Steelband Arrangers ?
Where are the Recordings going going ti take place ?
All Musicians Suppose to be Formally Educated as Musicians Yes ! and should be accepted as such as reflected by the respective educational institution.
It's not my belief that each pan Player ( HAVE)
to be formally Literary in music, that's an individual choice!
  • We are educating people in a field where there are few jobs.

  • My mind is on the basketball game tonight (Me and BUGS) so I cannot respond to this topic in my usual polemic fashion. But the gist of it is that the ACADEMICS are now lecturing PAN MEN  on PLAYING PAN. What an ABSURDITY. I woke up this morning thinking of posting a topic on the FRUSTRATION OF THE STEELBAND FRATERNITY. But this POSTING provides a platform for me to make my points. So Patrick Ramdoo -- keeps the fires burning on this one. And and soon as the SPLASH BROTHERS are finished terrorizing LeBron -- I'LL BE BACK.

  •  Are we talking arrangers only, how 'bout tuners and players? Arrangers are a dime a dozen, there are no shortages of arrangers in T&T, there aren't enough bands to satisfy the amount of arrangers out there. I don't believe that "a lack of music literacy" hinders arrangers from employment. Musicians should be musically literate.

If one gets a pan as a gift, the kids beat the hell out of it, now it needs tuning. Where does a person go to get a tuner? in the panyard? Can one 'google' pan tuners and a list of names and numbers appear? Check out PanTuner.com and see what you get and from whom. We are not ready. Which tuner in T&T has a website that one can access?
