Panorama NEEDS an UPGRADE

In a response to merrytonestothebone, Brother Aquil proposed this idea of how the Panorama should be upgraded to help benefit pan players financially. I suggest we all can help him by providing our ideas on what will work best to bring this idea to fruition.

 He said…

“it has four categories so players can play for four categories get $1000 each for the year. notice i say for the year. panorama should not all happen in the carnival. we should have National small band carnival in Point for the Borough day celebration. link up with the Ministry of Tourism to make the show bigger. and the single pan either on Emancipation Day competition within the march on Independence Day completion within the parade.”

Reason

1. no one attends small and single finals.

2. it is not an attraction because of the others shows it have to compete with during the carnival season.

Benefits

1. it will have enough players at the bands disposal, to demand players give their fear share of practice or the band will get some else.

2. added revenue (foreign exchange) as the country would have three panoramas during the year.

3.have the arrangers undivided attention as he would not have two arrange for four bands at the same time.

4. availability on turners. don't have to rush down the work because they have a next band to do.

5.players making money legally all through the year.

I am for year-round activity for PAN; I’ve always felt they should have another Group manage the small and single Pan activities, the Junior Panorama also. I’m still having a problem understanding how $1000.00 will cover appearance fees for players at these events. Why is there poor attendance at the small and single Finals? Why a Panorama type competition? Why not have them do something like the BIG5 showcasing their bands repertoire outside of their Panorama experience?

  • The suggestions for single pan bad competition on emancipation day sounds good. The idea of small bands in point may not be financially feasible considering the overheads and logistics to get finalists to the south western borough, in addition to the bands that my have already been invited for that occasion. I will choose not to comment on the remuneration to players. Independence or Republic days sounds excellent for hosting another category or categories. Spreading it out all year round has the potential to really cement Trinidad's position as the mecca of pan, boosting tourism and contributing to GDP. Brilliant suggestions, the person who came up with these ideas should definitely be a national steel band administrator.

    1. Is it reasonable to conclude that the introduction of the categorization of bands was multifold in its conception, and a stroke of political genius?

    2. If only for starters, the show not being an attraction does not take away from the fact that a significant 10% of the prize money bands earn from that show goes into the coffers of the governing body, in addition to the revenue generated from sponsorship, which if not negotiated separately from other better attended shows would not be wise economics.

The benefits, I have already addressed as brilliant, and whoever wrote this piece has my respect for their vision and foresight. Well done.

  • Good idea to fit small and single competitions between Laventille and Point, but there's something about Carnival and the pre-season.
  • did not anticipate the discussion would of develop into this, however this is excellent. the ideas have been circulating around for a while. It is just the men in charge not listening. we also need a carnival city. Where every weekend mass, pan and calypso could be displayed. visitors come to our country during the year and have nowhere to go to experience our culture.

keep the ideas coming guys the CIP members taking notes.

  • Nice idea, should give it a try.

  • Would be nice if somebody could reflect more on the quality of the panorama music. Just listened to Valentine Young posting of Ray Holman Odyssey by Pandemonium. What young arranger today in Trinidad can produce music like this. Not even the Supernover's man or Renegades man come close, but everybody want money.

    • Agree, there's work (training) that needs to get done, the problem today is no one wants to hire Ray for panorama work, check out the schools in the US that have Pan as part of their curriculum in their music departments, many can tell you who about Ray Holman arranging style. Their music directors and students have attended Master Classes he held at Ellie's workshops.

      • Never did a bad tune.
    • Do you mean the Phase11 man and the All Stars man could come close?

      • Come on man Phase 1! and All Stars are in a class by themselves, this is the level of music where we want all panorama performers to be at. Wake up.

        • In a class by themselves? Serious? I like Novas & Renegades. No sentimentality!
