Panyard to be transformed into homework centre

By CECILY ASSON - Trinidad Newsday

The only steelband in Penal has embarked on a mission to transform their panyard into a “liming block” and members are making it clear that the “block” will not be one where idle thoughts prevail, but one where young persons can thrive in a positive manner and become productive citizens.

Despite many challenges faced as a steelband, the executive of Trinidad Valley Harps Steel Orchestra of Sunrees Road, Penal, intend to use the panyard to make a difference in the little village from where they have operated for the past three decades.

Speaking with Newsday yesterday, Public Relations Officer, Abraham Nelson, said, “As a steelband, we don’t really get the type of support we believe we should have from everyone in the village, but that wouldn’t stop us from going forward. Against all the odds we are going to transform the panyard by making it a place of learning,” Nelson said. Included in their plans for 2015 in the panyard, is a homework centre and the building of a stage for performances. “You will not only learn to play pan,” he said. “Young people coming to lime on the block on evenings, will get involved in academics, they could do their homework, learning other skills and crafts.”
