Everything Related to the Steelpan Instrument and Music

My intention is not to bring about any controversy but just trying to see how the dropping of the high and low score on the judges score sheets is viewed by others.  We will all never agree with whatever system is used but with just one point separating the first four bands, followed by a tie for fifth position and just one point less, a tie with three bands for seventh. Were  the performances really that close? Never mind which is your favourite band. Should all the scores be left in or is there some other system that can be introduced? Just curious.

I would prefer if all are left in and none dropped, however I accept the present  system used. It can work both in favour of a band being in or out.

Hi Gerard.  I Agree with you fully but I see the discussion has taken a whole new slant and while I agree that the listen audience should be brought to life by the speed and musical renditions,is the judging process as difficult and complicated as Martin Maitland seems to suggest.  I respect your  sage contributions over the years what is your view?

This is a tough one. The criteria for judging pan is so difficult there is no real criteria and the pan arrangers don’t quite get it. I think personally no one really knows what is being judged. The two leading bands in winners row, Desperadoes and Renegades, have both played along the same lines for years with the slight punctuation of All Stars in the early days of pan. Now we have a mishmash of stiles and speeds making it hard to really judge. To change it now, one may say it is stifling the growth of pan, however how could you really judge reggae beat with a Soca beat or jazz beat. That is why most musical competitions have categories just for this purpose.
My opinion is they should judge this year and as of Next Year stipulate (BPM) Beats Per Minute, Maximum and minimum. This is Panorama and not a “sit down and listen to” festival. The music should move you like Soca and make you want to dance. I have no need for a funeral march at pan or a jazz ensemble. Brining the crowd to life should be a judging point. These guys practice for hours with absolutely no chance of winning when the judges see a Boogsie style one year or a Jit the other, bands such as Birdsong with Andy Narell or Fonclaire with Professor, might as well stayed in their pan yard.

i Agree and Point well Taken Mr. Martin...No offense to Birdsong but it was just music and at a panorama I look at where is the Spirit of Carnival in his arrangement...but i highly agree on the BPM of a panorama tune...

Mr Maitland, I am just curious. What did you think of Nutones - High Mass back in 1998?

YOUR COMMENT IS WELL TAKEN, PERHAPS IF OTHERS TAKE YOUR LEAD AND BE HEARD... THINGS JUST MIGHT CHANGE... COUNT ON ME!

I think you misunderstood what Mr Martin was trying to get across Arthur.

Hmm, I wonder why some of us think that panorama has to be judged by jazz musicians or those who have bin in or around jazz, are our musicologist's so mediocre that we lack the ability to judge our own indigenous artform. When was 'de rama' changed to a jazz festival. If its a jazz festival so of you want with bands playing jazz, fusion and the likes, then by all means have that as well, but making comparisons of this nature is not appropriate.
Pan like all of our indigenous artforms was bred from the bowels of our people and with it came the music and style of playing that music, which one of us here can say that we have ever heard the people from scotland saying they should get a panist to judge a bagpipe festival or a jazz festival in new orleanes saying they should get a soca artiste to judge, i believe part of our problem is that we suffer from over exposure most of the time and it causes us to loose sight of who we are as a people and there by always bringing ourselves down.....WE ARE GREAT and have much greatness to offer.

YES MOST OF THEM CAN'T REALLY JUDGE.BECAUSE MOST OF THEM ARE CLASSICALY TRAINED, IN MY EXPERIENCE WITH MOST OF THEM IS THAT THE CANNOT ARRANGE A CALYPSO. SO HOW COULD THEY JUDGE A SONG THAT IS NOT IN THEIR FIELD. IT'S PUTTING SQUARE PEGS IN A ROUND HOLE.

THAT"S DUMB AND STUPID BECAUSE YOU CAN HEAR JAZZ,BLUES,BEEBOB.OR LATIN, BUT  BANDS LIKE ALLSTARS PLAY ONLY RUNS LIKE CLASSIC, WHERE IF U PLAY ABOVE MENTION, YOU WILL HEAR LOTS OF COLOURS. MOODS,THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE GIVEN ALLSTARS &SILVER STARS THELAST FOUR PANORAMAS  WITH THE SAME TATA EVERY YEAR.

And they giving ALL STARS this Panorama, too. Is total confusion in the panorama performances yet so many on this forum believe this to be some internationally marketable product that the world is just dying to see and hear.

NOW CLAUDE if All Stars play to win they Play to WIN...we all can agree to disagree about the bands and placing of your favorite band/s... So i wonder who U think should be leading or winning this Panorama cause. at the end of the day we all cant win but we all can Lose..
