Those aboard the famous Empire Windrush brought with them some killer tunes
ByThomas Kingsley Community News Reporter
Standing on the deck of the Empire Windrush on June 22, 1948, singer Lord Kitchener was captured by a news reporter singing an ode to his new home.
The lyrics went: "London is the place for me, London this lovely city..."
Aldwyn Roberts, known by his stage name Lord Kitchener, didn't just bring to London his hopes and dreams of building a new life but as the self-proclaimed 'King of Calypso' he brought a genre of party music that would become the soundtrack to the Notting Hill Carnival and even grab the attention of the Queen.
Lord Kitchener was already renowned in his home country Trinidad and Tobago before moving to London.
His music was popular among US troops in the Second World War, leading to performances in New York City.
