Long-time panist and rhythm man Rudy “Indian” Bowen died of cancer on the night of Thursday October 24, 2013. “Indian” (Rudy) was an early member of Tripoli Steelband in the early 50s, then went on to England and played with various groups there, then came to New York and did the same.
He also worked for WIADCA (West Indian American Day Carnival Association) at the Brooklyn Museum for years. Bowen’s grandfather was the famous money lender in St. James, Trinidad, who calypsonian Mighty Chalkdust sang about.
