Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Although there has been no definitive word from major stakeholders regarding plans for this country’s annual carnival festivities in 2022, band leader for HADCO Phase II Pan Groove, Lennox Boogsie Sharpe and his team, continue to work diligently to ensure that they are ready to adapt seamlessly to any perceived changes. In fact, following Government’s recent announcement of plans to re-open the entertainment sector on a phased basis within the next few weeks, the band confirms that a number of health and safety protocols have already been established to welcome musicians and supporters back to the pan yard, in a controlled environment.

Fully vaccinated and raring to go!Fully vaccinated and raring to go! Dr. Len Boogsie Sharpe interacts with some of the band’s stage side musicians during a closed practice session.

According to Sharpe, although its membership has not resumed full stage side rehearsals since May 2021, the time has been used productively, resulting in strategic focus being placed on infrastructural works and maintenance of the band’s compound. Such efforts are in sync with the public’s expectations for quality from HADCO Group of Companies and provided meaningful short-term employment for those involved. Improvements included the installation of additional sinks for the washing of hands, the widening of the general practice area for social distancing, as well as, welding repair works. Additionally, a mandatory face mask policy continues to be in effect for all musicians, service providers and visitors, while hand sanitizers have been placed at various points for use.

  • I have written many times before that the BIG 5 shall lead the way for the steelband movement.

In Steelband Survival and Sustainability in The Post Pandemic Era I wrote, "I suspect that attendance at public events in the foreseeable future may be hinged on attendees’ ability to demonstrate immunization for, or negativity to, the COVID 19 virus and variants. How could this impact steelbands, and what mitigation is being considered?  The leadership of the movement must take a stand on vaccination. Traditional income streams of steelbands are usually events of mass gatherings, steelbands cannot survive sustainably performing in a bubble."

In Governance, Startup and Reopening I wrote, "Speaking as a panman, I am encouraged by the statements of senior cabinet ministers within the last week. Their decisive action in announcing measures designed to unblock avenues of revenue earning streams for artistes is visionary. As a supporter of the incumbent government of our Republic, I am motivated with the response to the global pandemic, in ensuring that the health of our nation is preserved. As a citizen of The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, I am satisfied with the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley."

I have written extensively about the benefits of immunization, and its necessity for the sustainability of steelbands in the post pandemic era

Here I see a recognized leader of the global steelband movement, Dr. Lennox Boogsie Sharpe leading from the front, in an effort to get the local steelband industry moving again, and hit the ground running.

Thank you Boogsie for looking out for the steelband industy, and leading from the front.

Thank you captain, Terry Bernard for educating your membership about the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccinations, as a means of combating the negative impacts of the global pandemic. Terry Bernard confirmed that to date, approximately ninety-two (92%) of its stage side has been inoculated, since many have come to appreciate the importance of being fully immunized, to be able to resume rehearsals and public activities.

The PHASE's management went on to state that, "...attention is being given to the adherence of all health protocols...".

I want to public thank The Phase II stage side for publicly leading the way for Trinidad and Tobago and of course for the steelband movement globally.

Boogsie was born to lead, and history must record (Kim Johnson, Ian Franklin, Glenroy Joseph, Dalton Narine, Ray Funk) that Boogsie, singlehandedly as a steelband leader, publicly led the way (by leading by example) for the reopening and startup of the steelband industry in the post pandemic era!
