Here I am, trying to support pan, and anxioue to enjoy a good pan concert. So I try to buy my copies of the Pillars of Steel CD and DVD on WACK FM as advertised.

Come to find out its not available.

It was taken of the market for legal reasons.

Apparently, All Stars claim to know nothing about the recordings.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON???

  • Well thank God that I got my DVD and CDs in time; within days of WACK puting it on their Website.

As you say the heavy rainstorm may have played an important part in the quality of sound reproduction. It was not up to standard. But I was amazed they managed to capture anything at all.

I think it was the type of concert which would have benefitted from being held in-doors like the building they put up across the road from the savannah. I also watched it while broadcasting but my broadband speed was not doing it justice.

So I have a treasured item! About time too.

  • I may have been the first one besides the All Stars management that knew that legal action was going to be taken by All Stars. I did not want to feel like a snitch, but I did tell the producer of All Stars plans when I found out.

I agree with you Glenroy; The four Steel Orchestras should have been told about the planned recordings. Steel Orchestras must be aware of their "intellectual property." I still commend WACK radio for streaming, The 4 Pillars Of steel Concert.

They are the only radio station where pan can be heard for four hours on a Sunday. I beleive that only Pan Trinbago owns the rights of any Steel Orchestra performance as long as it sanctioned by them.

All Stars' actions may be the start of "solidarity without deceipt" by the Large Steel Orchestras.

    • Ian, I am in general agreement with you; however, we differ on Pan Trinbago owing the rights to the performance of any steel orchestra. Why would any steelband agree to that? After all, the intellectual property rights should belong to those who play the music, except in this case the music played was all cover music. I wonder if the producers of the CD or DVD obtained permission from ASCAP or BMI! Would you give up the rights to the books you publish to Pan Trinbago? By the way, I am still awaiting the copy of your latest book. Peace.
      • Hello Ajamu,

I would not challenge your disagreement, but I have never seen the panorama finalists promoting any DVD or CD of a panorama finals. (lol)

Gavin still has not contacted you eh! I will give him a call.

  • Apparently there is a dispute between the show's promoters and the steelbands, who are saying that the CDs and DVD were produced and are being sold without their permission.

If that is the case,  and if  this means that the steelbands are standing up for themselves, then more power to the steelbands!

  • For the amount of Pan concerts that they does have you will think you will be able to get cds or dvds but when I decided to look in to it I was told that not all bands would be willing to agree to it, they are looking at it as them being able to get royalties due to them.
  • For what it's worth it's on youtube, and the quality's not great - most of the time the audio and video are severely out of sync
  • If they really want us to "do something for pan", we deserve an explanation!!!
