Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she hopes steelpan music will soon become part of the repertoire of the National Symphony Orchestra of the United States.

This, as the Prime Minister hosted the NSO at the Diplomatic Centre, following a scintillating performance at NAPA which was led by Maestro Christoph Eschenbach.

It was the National Symphony Orchestra's first concert of its tour of the Americas and it formed part of this country's 50th anniversary celebrations.

  • THE US NAVY MAINTAINED A STEELBAND FROM 1957 TO 1999,  HAS THE MUCH MORE EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPEMENT PROGRAMS, PAYS MUCH MORE RESPECT TO PAN THAN THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. WHY IS THE STEELPAN NOT INCLUDED IN THE OFFICIAL VERSION OF T&T'S NATIONAL ANTHEM? WHERE IS THE ACT OF PARLIMENT DECLARING THE STEELPAN THE NATIONAL  INSTRUMENT AND EMBLEM?

    • Well Hameed Shaqq,,,ah like yuh style,,look good yuh ain,t get into trouble if yuh living in T&T,,,neverhtheless let the truth be known,,,keep on going on,,Nuff Respect,,God Bless.

    • True dat, Hameed!

Why do we lack even the basics?  Why not copy from other places their way(s) of promoting their own?  There is nothing wrong with mimic men copying from others if one copies something good.  The Europeans know very well how to establish/maintain their own cultural priorities.

  • Hello,

Pan lovers abroad would also like to have access to this form and send our contribution to keep Pan alive, locally and internationally.  There should be some accountability in place so that nationals and non-nationals would know that their contribution has been received and documented.  A letter of acknowledgement should be sent to all contributors.

"If you live in T&T you can just go in and sign up a form which deals with non pan band members and pay a small fee in T&T$. Could you imagine lawyers, businessmen with experience, accountants..."

    • Hello Rosy:

I think that expecting "accountability" or any "letter of acknowledgement" from T&T recgnising one's contribution(s) seems a bit far fetched to me, even though I share you sentiment and willlingness to contribute something.

  • Looks like we are working backwards, we need to protect and take care our house first before it burn down. There are  so many things that need to be done and we are doing nothing bout it. Standardizing the pans, patent the pan (hope no body took it away yet) A Pan factory, being able to have good quality drums available, being able to take care of the Tuners, Pan in every school, earning a degree in Pan, Please Ms Prime Minister PUSH the Pan it's our national instrument (When we have important functions let the Pan play) These are some of the major roots in order for it to grow, don't let the rest of the world take it from us.

    • Bede, we are not working backwards, there are 3 discussions on the forum addressing these issues 1. PM: Pan in the Classroom stays 2. Completion of PanTrinbago Headquarters 3. The manufacturing of the G-Pans. UTT is offering degree in Pan. These projects are moving very timely, I am staying on top of it.

It is not the PM job to PUSH the Pan, check on these 3 discussions and see who are the contributors ??? only Salah and Cecil make valuable contributions on these discussions. The negative discussions get all the attention.

I will tell you that I will never sleep on these 3 discussions until they are completed, I observed from the discussions that those who are living outside of T&T have no passion for the positive discussions of going forward and getting results.

Sidd, thanks for that valuable information about Affiliate Membership in PT - We are moving in the right direction.

Nobody can take the Steelpan from us as Royce Russell logo said BORN IN T&T - ENJOYED WORLDWIDE.

  • Come folks, we have an opportunity now to walk the talk and do something for PAN. Lets all become affiliates of Pantrinbago and change things. This is the least we can do for the PAN !!!

    • What had pantrinbago done during last year ,when there was a shortage of empty  drums for the making of the steelpans,, Mr Bertel Gittens,,,where were  you,,,Tuners had to sit or get up and get,,,The  Truth,,respect.

  • Suggestions that should have been made many, many years ago. Apparently we just woke up. The PM has spoken.
