  • What an odd statement. "All that inside instrumentation is beyond the capability of the steelpan.'

If you are talking about the variety of sound types that we can hear -- of course it is impossible for a steelband to reproduce it. A steelband, as the name suggests, is an all-steel percussion orchestra. Despite the number of tones and cadences it can produce! How can you ask a steelband to 'really' reproduce the sound of a recording made by brass, strings, electronic organ, vocals and skin drums?  it is like asking a chamber orchestra to reproduce the sound of a drum ensemble ,  Paul Robeson could never 'really reproduce' the sound of Maria Callas; We would not want Nat King Cole to 'really reproduce' the sound of Mario Lanza, Or, to be a bit facetious, We would never ask: "Can a roti maker, using his equipment, ever really reproduce a good hops bread" Two different things.

On another point, even the brilliant performance by Despers as produced, is unfair to them as Blueboy's production is studio-recorded, with as many takes and overlays as Goddard needed to get it perfect. So we can clearly hear all of the little things 'inside' the arrangement. Despers' was an open-air once and for all take.

On to Despers, Could Pelham Goddard, who arranged for Blue, ever really take that band and reproduce the sound, the excitement, that Bradley created with Despers? Never, good as Pelham was. Two different things.

And finally, as Blue himself says, it was de sweet music of de pan dat generated de excitement dat make de gyul Rebecca get so high dat she buss way all she shirt button an start to wine like she mad!

Pelham Goddard, Clarence Curvan, Cito Fermin, Dutchys, none a demm alltime greats couda eva do dat!

    Pan in yuh rutungkutungkung

  • I eh sure if is so the ting really happen

Because meh head was so bad

But Rebecca bus away all she shirt button

And she start to wine like she mad ...

Now tell me: Can any STEELBAND really reproduce this ORIGINAL PRODUCTION???

All that inside instrumentation is beyond the capabilities of STEEL PAN.
