Bridgetown, Barbados, (CMC) -  ...He quoted a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that noted trade in creative goods and services reached close to US$600 billion despite the sluggish pace of the global economy.

 

"I would even venture to say that this sector, which comprises heritage products...the visual arts and media products, both of a print and audio-visual nature, holds perhaps the greatest potential for small economies in the Caribbean to diversify their economic base.

"In fact, Caribbean countries have some degree of competitive advantage in the cultural and creative sector which we seem unable to adequately exploit."

Added Nicholls: "On the heritage front, we have developed a world reputation with our Carnivals and various indigenous festivals, while in the musical field we have introduced the steel-band and various musical genres which need to be promoted internationally. If this sector is to be internationally competitive, we must be prepared to move it from the margins of economic activity where it exists almost as an outside child" to the centre of economic policy formulation."
