Trinidad and Tobago calypsonian "Roaring Lion" (22 February 1908 – 11 July 1999), who during his 65-year career which began in the early 1930s and is best known for his compositions "Ugly Woman" (1933), "Mary Ann" and "Netty, Netty", which are still performed today, was the grandfather of Alfonso Ribeiro aka Carlton Banks.


The song "If You Wanna Be Happy", which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 18 May 1963, as well as the R&B singles chart, is based on Roaring Lion's "Ugly Woman".

  • Funny: well this boy must be my family too (distant distant family). "Roaring Lion" (Rafael De Leon) and my father grew up together in the Caura Hills as cocoa panyol cousins with the parang and the pastels. I used to go visit him in Mt. Lambert with my father in the nineties. I think he died in the late nineties.
