Can anyone tell me what year and which steelband started to "Rock The Boat" For those who don't know what rocking the boat is, it's when the mas players [mostly sailors] form lines and move from left to right at the same time creating the motion of a wave.

Now lets hear about the clash with Invaders and Tokvo I think this was the first big clash.
I think that Steelband Clash was in 1950 and Blakie sang a calypso bout it in 1954, In 1950 I was still holding my Mom hands to cross the street, (I was 6)
Cecil,
Bede gave you the year; the exact date was the 10th of February,1959. I was still in single digits, but was present.
I saw when a SJAS soldier bounce down Desperadoes' Queen and "I would not mention his name" hit that man one pound on the head with his tenor, and the tenor dent. (lol) After that I heard a woman saying, run little boy, and then my aunt came and we hurried through the hospital gate, exited unto Belmont Circular Road going East, then South on Observatory Street and then turned East up Quarry Street unto Laventille Road. Oh shucks, you know that I never taught about this in detail until now. I guess its called "suppressed memory" (lol)
In that Steelband Clash, those "Hench Men" from the East, (ah don't want to call name, they might get up from their Grave) got a real serious Cutarse that they never never forget. Man, you talk bout licks. Just imagine ah Band doing Battle against Tokyo and Desperadoes, and am sure them fellas from the Labass "Marabuntas" was in Tokyo. (real Cutarse oui,)
It can only be from 4 Steelbands, Tripoli, All Stars, Tokyo, or City Syncopators
I agree Bede, there has never been much talk about this but seeing a sailor band coming down the road with a few hundred people rockin D boat was an awesome sight.
I remembered I was with City Syncopators in 1961, they played USS Detroit, Synco beating "Madame Dracula" and they "Rocking the Boat", those were the good old days. Synco in those days used to be the Largest Sailor Band, All Stars used to play "Fleets in", Tokyo used to play USS Skipjack, I cant remember what Tripoli used to play, Remember I was not ah West man, I am from behind the bridge, lol
Tripoli used to play WAR mas, they were the first to build a TANK over a car, when they reach on the stage yuh see man crawling on they belly, radio man sending message, man it was real war on the stage, I would be nice seeing a band play war mas today.
Tripoli was the first to build a tall rocket ship with multi-colored smoke shooting out from the base. They bus a lot of carbide in those days.
In the early days Tripoli was very innovative.
