Scipio Sargeant passed away earlier today

New York - Steelband arranger and guitarist Scipio Sargeant passed away earlier today. SCIPIO “Skip” or “Sarge” Sargeant was born in Trinidad. At an early age he distinguished himself as one of the top musicians in his home country. As co-arranger for Despers USA, Sargeant won a record five of the orchestra’s six consecutive New York Panorama Championships from 1993–1998.

My condelences to Scipio Sergeants Family. He was a vey talented man. I had the pleasure of hearing him play alot on many gigs with Ricardo Jerome. He was a fighter all the way to the end. My condolensces to Scipio's family. He was a very talented indiviual and a good friend. I played his music in collaboration with Denzel Botus for 5 panorama championships with Despers USA. He will surely be missed. God is receiving another musical angel for his kingdom of heaven. Rest In Peace Sarge...

I met sarge during the 2005 panorama while i was playing for sesame flyers. He acknowledged me as a fine bass player and asked me to teach his son how to play and he was also teaching my sister how to play the guitar. That was a great summer for me. Sarge always complimented me on my talents and helped improve them as well, keeping me smiling through the whole practice made the days even better . Each day after that summer was a blessing to see him again. He was brilliant and extrodinary in many ways and thats what made him special to everyone he came in contact with him or his music. Sarge's passing is a hard time and i send my very best wishes to his family especially his son. It hurts because I never said a proper goodbye but i will always hold him in my memory and heart.

Sarge will be remembered in so many ways never will his name be said and he recieves no acknowledgment for all he accomplished. R.I.P MUCH LOVE

A good arranger. I still remember the 1967 panorama piece"Governor's Ball" that had me going crazy in the savannah and also on the streets on Carnival Tuesday.That piece of music, together with the incomparable "Czardas" cemented my love for the Desperadoes as a steel orchestra. God be with you, my brother.You did well.

I heard that "Sarge" was ill, but did not know to what extent. I first met Mr.Sargeant in 1967. He was suggested to Rudolph Charles by someone to replace Beverly Griffith. Before Mr. Sergeant arrived, Mr. Ron Beverage had already put down a verse and chorus of Kitchener's "Sixty Seven." When Mr. Sergeant came he scraped Ron Beverage's "67" and did a new version. Was I a little "vex"! (smiles). He and some of the members of the band co-arranged and gave Desperadoes second place at Panorama, the Bomb and "Is Paris Burning". For Panorama 1967, the finalist were required to play three selections. He stayed as the main arranger of Desperadoes until he migrated to New York in late1967. He began co-arranging with Mr. Denzil "belt" Botus in 1994, and that duo gave Despers USA five consecutive panorama victories. The pan diaspora have lost another pan pioneer. He will be surely missed.
