Scotia increases steelband sponsorships

Gisele del V Marfleet, chair of the Scotia Foundation and Vernon Morancie, chairman, Eastern Region, Pan Trinbago, at the Foundation’s presentation of grants to unsponsored steelbandsTrinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Steelbands leaders have praised the Scotiabank Foundation for its decision to double contributions to unsponsored steelbands preparing for the National Panorama competition and increase the number of bands qualifying under the grants system.

At the 36th Annual Donations to Unsponsored Steelbands Ceremony at Scotiabank T&T Ltd’s headquarters in Port-of-Spain, the Foundation announced that contributions to steelbands had been increased by 100 per cent. Last year, the steelband assistant programme paid out $150,000 to 50 steelbands. This year’s figure is $300,000 to 65 bands.

  • who are the bands and how are chosen ?

  • It will be great if the T & T Govt' could pass a law that all Companies doing Business in Trinidad & Tobago to either Sponsor A Steel band or take the Initiative that of Scotia bank and give an X amount to the Steel bands yearly, (Make it a law or you can't do Business here).The Steel bands around Carnival time always need help, they always run at a loss.(too much over head) (please don't let the Money come through Pan Trinbago via Diaz)

    • It wouldn't be right for the government to force anyone to sponger or give,they would jut go elsewhere and do business, and who would loose! I am from Nova Scotia Canada and I see how a lot of companies left the country just because of the taxes The poor workers are the first to loose out..Think of it this way; if they forced tourists to give to the poor because the came to vacation in Trinidad who would come? Uh Oooooo there goes your tourist business
