SEVEN A SIDE PAN CONTEST....

Most steelbands has members that could arrange but never given the opportunity How about having a contest where every band could have two groups of seven players each, using two arrangers from the band go at each other. This could surely bring exposure to the other arrangers in bands.

  • Great idea. It could be set up as a showcase but we all know that competition breeds excellence.

    • Sherwin musicians can be very competitive without having a competition as such.Panorama has shown us that competition can also breed contempt, just browse the arguments on these pages after a Panorama, and you would see.Don't expect anything different for another competition.

The Pan Blockos without all the restrictions that comes with a competition, provided listeners with excellent enjoyable music, without anyone having to be contemptuous of any judge's decision. No criteria,no number limit,no official time limit,no restriction on choice of tunes......In sum,no boundaries.

Let the music play, let people enjoy!

      • oswald, if only they could sell something like this.

        • Cecil, this was a seller as the place to be on a Sunday was the Solo Panyard.Owen Serrette can confirm what I am saying.Tokyo,Sherzando,Nutones,Melodians,Fonclaire among other bands that would have theirs. Some bans got together to keep their Blocko.

A number of factors contributed to the demise of the Blockos......among them were; the upsurge in cocaine use,the closing of the National Brewing Company, the violence (guns) that came with cocaine, the shortsightedness of coporate T&T.

This week one of the most asked question on the blocks was......"whey it hah pan dis weekend bwoy".....the answers were....."mih eh hear bout nutten"......"mi eh kno".....'Nah bwoy, nutten dis weekend"

          So there is a market.

  • In the Pan Blocko years, many bands used in house arrangers to do their music......these Blockos provide the bands a great opportunity to showcase their music.....the bands, arrangers and players were energized to quickly add fresh music to their repertoire for the next play out.I have fond memories of Ken and Evans doing Tokyo's pop and funk tunes and Fonclaire with their showtime sets.

I believe the Pan Blocko should be reincarnated, and be properly funded by private enterprise with some state inputs.Pan harnesses the greatest amount of youth energies into productive and positive outcomes.

Simply stated.......more spent on Pan,would lead to less spent on Crime......A Win-Win situation for all.

  • Set up a Friday after work LIME and Pan CONCERT in the Pan Yard.

Get someone to set up a Bar, and the band committee sell food stuff.

    • Good idea Raphael.

      • Why does it have to be a competition?? How about just a show/concert??

        • I agree Ajamu, they just don't get it. Something else to argue about. Long time no see bro. Where is Adrian? I'm at Kentishborde@ yahoo.com
