  • I'm not sure I understand the question, and it comes over as "leading" (towards a certain biased view).Having said that, I think that knowledge of any subject area, should be a requirement to teach the subject. As far as knowledge of the instrument, I think that many people who do not play the instrument have knowledge of the instrument.

I have never seen Dr. Dawn Batson play pan, but she continues to recruit, teach, and produce some of the finest pan players in the world. I think that it takes a special quality besides knowledge of the subject area, to be a great teacher. In fact, the most memorable teachers I had, left their impression on me, with lessons in life, that had nothing to do with the subject. Especially my music professors, Dr. B included.

Clive Bradley was a great teacher, and came over as very patient when he taught me a few things. He also had a simple approach to teaching the theory behind the music. To quote William Arthur Ward, "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” My teachers inspired me, and as a "teacher", I aim to also inspire my "students".

  • Isn't the steelpan developed and played by those who did not have musical (european classical) training?   The steelpan is a group enterprise (the steelband) therefore it is a case of "each one teach one!"   Then of course, can anything be taught at all?   Or, is it the "reception" from the one who seeks to learn that is the key?  Thank you Mighty Jamma for making me think!    Therefore, you are a great teacher!

  • Just because one plays or "understands" the pan does not mean that they can teach music. Its a common thought that pan is somehow separate or different than other musical instruments. All instruments share 2 qualities. They are easy to play, and they are hard to sound good on. If they weren't, they would still be in R & D. Whatever instruments hook or jumbie yuh you should seek out a qualified music teacher.

  • Should Chemistry be taught to only those who understand elements and how they operate?
