  • For the record: I only put up this song because a few days ago when I signed on I saw some guy in the Main Room asking about finding a recording of this song.

  • Sweet pan.  I was pushing pan in those days.  We took it for granted and now we appreciate the super talented individuals who produced such great music.

    • gerard greene: I was living in and out of Trinidad between 1960 and 1963. So then I came back to Trinidad and living in San Juan (Newalloville -- just like the school girl Minister of Culture) and ah gone in town for Jour Ouvert walking up and down listening to all dem steelbands. Next thing I know I run in to this steelband  called SILVER STARS and no PAN MUSIC has ever hooked me like that THEN or FOREVER AFTER.

Now everybody on this forum will call me a HYPOCRITE because I am always criticizing the EXPATS for living in the past. But every so often when I listen to some SILVER STARS recordings WATER COME TO MEH EYE. That is the GREATEST STEELBAND in the HISTORY of PAN MUSIC.

I don't care what Bertel Gittens and Cecil Hinkson and their BOOGSIE MANIA say!!!

Somewhere my love ... there will be songs to sing!!! And I am still singing praises to Junior Pouchett and SILVER STARS STEEL ORCHESTRA.

The SWEETEST piece of PAN ever RECORDED ...

      • Claude:

“Romancing the past”, are we?  I told you it isn’t all that bad.

You sound almost apologetic and as I said before in response to a post you initiated sometime back — that’s your choice, as an expat or not.

[ I refer you to the posting you initiated to which I did reply, by the way.

Greatest steel band ever ” like “beauty” is in the eyes/(ears) of the beholder, and therefore, has to be purely relative.

What do you think of their rendition of “Gaudeamus Igitur”? That simple arrangement resounds with me.

May we all continue to sing praises to Junior Pouchet and Silver Stars Steel Orchestra.

Gaudeamus Igitur — So let us rejoice.

          • ODW:

When it comes to your music, and knowledge of, may I say, sir, I think you are unparalleled.

I would also like to think your response indicates you are in accord with my choice.

To me, that arrangement of Gaudeamus Igitur is the apotheosis of “jour ‘vert”.

Oh! How you bring back the taste of “The Square One” as Carnival Monday early morning sun beats down.

Yuh mus know what ah torking bout, right?  :-)

            Thank you & blessings.

            • Peter deLight,

Thanks, I’m humbled; I don’t consider myself more knowledgeable than some of the steelband connoisseurs on the forum. I do agree with your comment, if my memory serves me correct this was a Sanch cassette tape recording of their Bomb tune.

Sanch and my deceased brother-in-law were big audio hi-fi enthusiasts and music collectors, building speakers, recording live music “reel to reel” in dance parties with the big bands of that era; they produced a Jazz program for radio. Their love and involvement documenting the music and its history helped developed my appreciation for the art-form.

              • ODW:

Ah hah!  Now I understand a little better — your musical roots run real deep.

My guess is you have an extensive collection, a library if you will, of music stretching the ‘ages’. But what astounds me, is — you seem to have an uncanny method of quick retrieval of both pan tunes and calypsos.

Continue to keep us breathing, reminiscing and even 'romancing the past' with your musical responses.   Much appreciated.

      • Silver Stars in JP days was one of the most successful steelbands.

  • That's SilverStars best panorama tune from back in the day.
