Junia Regrello With respect to the comments on this forum [Pan Trivia & More] with reference to Skiffle’s selection for Panorama 2019 and the rational behind the Management of Skiffle decision is based on, please note that l said “ The Management of Skiffle”
The membership, like everyone else was hooked on Farmer Nappy’s song and the band made a decision on that basis, however, the Man. Comm had issues with the structure of the song and it’s incredible popularity and decided to learn a few other songs to acquire a feel or something that stood out.
As you would be aware, our Arrangers live in the US, therefore, time was on our hands.
When this arrangement with these guys started 3 yrs ago, several persons including senior officials of the then Ex of Pantrinbago attempted to persuade us from going in that direction.
Today, l am extremely proud of these young men with profound roots in my Country and what they have been able to accomplish. To the best of my knowledge they hold, likewise myself, the utmost respect for our legendary arrangers and for those making the comparative analysis need to check the relationship between Boogsie and Skiffle which spans over 42 yrs, During those yrs we had several competitive encounters when Skiffle joined the elite ranks of large conventional bands, with the Phase cutting our tail good and proper and Skiffle having the upper hand on them in Point Fortin Borough Day Comp. in 2000 and 2001 as well as Pan in the 21st Century Comp ( when it was included in the Panorama Programme) in 1999 and 2000.
Under Boogsie’s hand we won 3 Steelband Festival titles as a Traditional band 84, 86 and 88 and for those who like to keep records “ In the Rain Forest was composed in 1990 under a different name for the 1990 Music festival which was cancelled due to the insurrection of that year
And we all know of the World Steelband Festival in 2000.
The decision to go with Hello last year was my decision albeit with 5 days to go and the arrangers and players delivered, what is even more strange is that l did not know the name of the song or who sang it, given my age you would understand that.
It is an honour for us as a relatively young band to compete with and against our more illustrious peers, applying new paradigms as we come around the learning curve.
The Steelband movement has benefitted from the competitive aspect, as we push each other to greater heights with respect for all.
It matters not to us if we are first or last as there is no shame in being placed behind our heroes.
