So where is the PAN MUSIC?

We have that marvelous invention by Salmon Cupid called the E-PAN!!! We have advanced technology delivering the rhythms and sounds of PAN and PERCUSSION to your fingertips in the studio -- courtesy David Chow and Johann Chuckaree. We have a 35M$ G-PAN. We have PAN MUSIC graduates at every level across North America and Europe. We have PAN VIRTUOSOS in Trinidad and New York and England who could pierce the heart of any music lover (the world over) with a LIVE PERFORMANCE.

And yet nobody seems to be able to deliver a decent piece of recorded PAN MUSIC which could break some barriers and start getting some global airplay.

Even Andy Narell boil over and have nothing more to offer. Liam Teague have all that music education and mastery over the instrument but like he got ZERO composition skills. Johann Chuckaree who is such a highly acclaimed musician and pan player (and is part of the INDIGISOUNDS team) is still miles away from composing anything worth more than the first three seconds of listening time. That highly anticipated new release by the Codrington Family was a big disappointment. Salmon Cupid flying all over the world with that super tricked out E-PAN and can't even record a decent version of MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB.

I know for a fact that it CANNOT BE THAT DIFFICULT!!!

  • Whatever we do , whatever discussions we have, or panels we form,  we will get nowhere unless we address the issue of steelbands putting most of their talents and energy in producing one highly arranged , semi classical piece of music (with limited popular  appeal) annually at a time of year when the steelbands should be exploring , performing and promoting contemporary party music that would appeal to a younger generation and begin a process of creating a modern market for the artform.

  • MusicTT seeks strategic plan success...

    Published:

Earlier this week, T&T Music Company Ltd (MusicTT) invited members of the media to a collaborative session with Sound Diplomacy, the UK-based company that will be responsible for producing the National Strategic Action Plan for the Music Industry of T&T.

On October 1, Sound Diplomacy and MusicTT will also convene an “engagement session” at the CLR James Auditorium, Cipriani College of Labour and Co-Operative Studies, Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Valsayn at 2 pm.

MusicTT GM Jeanelle Frontin said Saturday’s session is imperative for Sound Diplomacy to get a comprehensive insight of T&T culture and our music industry’s distinctive issues directly from its stakeholders.

Frontin assured that, in addition, MusicTT will be ensuring that there are widely-circulated online surveys and calls/interviews with all the music/music-related organisations, associations, influential stakeholder groups and representatives of various relevant entities.

Asked why a foreign entity was selected to pilot this initiative, Frontin said: “We (MusicTT) put out a request for proposals for the Strategic Action Plan for the Music Industry of T&T last year (the deadline was in August 2015) and we received tender proposals for local, regional and foreign companies. By following the proper procurement process, all proposals were evaluated and Sound Diplomacy was, eventually, awarded the tender.

“Their experience in this area is quite extensive and we are confident in their ability to do this. They are also cognisant of how much of our culture they will need to understand in order to be successful with this project.

“This is also one of the reasons that this has been their first priority before beginning the development of the strategic action plan—being here, meeting with as many organisations and people as possible, to gain that unique insight.

“They will also be conducting interviews and online surveys both for the music industry and the general public (consumers of music) which we hope as many as possible will contribute to as well. This survey exercise will begin within the next couple weeks.”

    • odw: Thanks for this post. Plenty talk as has been pointed out.

“I know that over the years, many of our passionate stakeholders have gone to these and come away from them feeling despondent, like it was ‘just another talk shop’. They contribute their views but, over time, nothing ever changes. These ‘talk shops’ have been an undeniable occurrence within the industry.

“We are hoping to end that vicious cycle by our actions. We want to not just ensure that strategic direction taken for our country in music is powered by their collective voice, but also that our implementation from October 2017 will prove that this engagement was not ‘just another talk shop’.”

I like the idea that they brought down this UK Company (Sound Diplomacy) to assist. That shows some openness in addressing their plight. But like all the other organizations down there they get too top heavy with management and protocol.

I have made this suggestion before: Bring down two African American music producers and one WST director (dem WST people know a lot about music -- plenty plenty) and immerse them in the culture for a short while (this line from your post "They are also cognisant of how much of our culture they will need to understand in order to be successful with this project." shows a common thread) by taking them to some shows and pan yards and have them walk the streets of the city and visit the beaches and hang out in some rum shops and parties ... Et cetera!!! In that way they get to hear the music and feel the vibes of the island and the people.

Then you lock them up in some fancy hotel rooms or at a nice beach house for two weeks with Leston Paul and Phelam Goddard and Alvin Daniel and Beaver Henderson (okay! okay! throw in Khari Codrington too) and tell them to make some music that represents the TRINIDAD VIBE which could penetrate the global music market.

I appreciate you putting up that article, odw -- very much. I needed to read it. Most of all it tells me that music people are waking up down in T&T and recognizing the fact that they need OUTSIDE HELP if they want to move forward. Seeing them take that step lifts a burden off my shoulder because at least they are in the starting gate whether they finish the race or not. They also have to address the LARGE built-in EXPAT audience who could be their core source of sales and word of mouth marketing.

They could have SOUND DIPLOMACY in London and they could have an equivalent team in New York both working with the local talent to produce world stage music. I believe in the product; I have heard it exploited in so many ways for decades. Why can't we control our own product and destiny with assistance from experts from the outside?

Anybody knows who T&T Music Company Ltd (MusicTT) is? It would be nice to get some background information on them. I expect XPATS and LOCALS to rise to that level of function as long as they don't go too top heavy with MANAGEMENT and PROTOCOL.

      • MusicTT is a subsidiary of CreativeTT, a State Agency under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment & Communications in the Government of Trinidad & Tobago.

  • Thank you for your feedback Mr. Gonzales although, I expected that you would have emailed me your thoughts like we had discussed. I'm interested in knowing what about it was disappointing for you. Perhaps it would be of benefit for others who may have plans of releasing their music. Khari

  • Is there violin music or guitar music or any other instrument music? An instrument should be able to play music.the problem is with the people who has taken up the pan instrument as there choice they have a one track mind pan music ( Panorama ).I guess there knowledge of music is limited because of what the pan has to offer, with most players you can only play two notes because they play with two mallets unless you can play with four mallets then you can play four notes. I guess that's why there isn't quality music being played and with that e-pan you are still in the same boat.
