SOCA MONARCH DELUSION

One of my biggest HOPES (Cultural and Patriotic) is that TRINI EXPATS and TRINI LOCALS join forces and work as T-E-A-M-S for the betterment of the nation.

The LOCALS don't have a clue about America and the EXPATS think that Trinidad is a non-evolving country that stopped spinning with the rest of the globe once they leave "HOME" and hit foreign.

Here is a statement from Wendy Fitzwilliam on tomorrow night's SOCA MONARCH COMPETITION.

"Fitzwilliam said tomorrow’s competition will be broadcast through Pay-Per-View to roughly 140 million households in North America."

And here is the reality on  the American TV MARKET:

According to Nielsen's 2014 Advance National TV Household Universe Estimate (UE), there are 115.6 million TV homes in the U.S., up 1.2% from the 2012-2013 estimate of 114.2 million.

The 2014 Super Bowl drew 111.5 million viewers -- and that was FREE TV.

  • Well said!
  • I for one have never believed that "Trinidad is a non-evolving country that stopped spinning with the rest of the globe once they leave "HOME" and hit foreign", and I left Trinidad in 1968.

As a matter of fact, whatever other faults our people may have, I've always known that Trinidadians are right up there with technology, and are a sharp, educated and technically literate people.

"And dat is why de dotishness does piss me off so much"

Trinidadians, on the other hand may think all of North America as New York, or some big city.

Having never lived in a big city, I've gotten to know Americans and Canadians of my age who grew up in rural an small town America and Canada, whose lives weren't that "advanced" from the way some of us grew up in Trini in those days, even with outhouses, and with limited media and utilities.

An example of what I mean be "dotishness", I happened to be watching a "government" panorama DVD from 2005.

Of course, in 2005 there were alternatives, but do you know that over the decades the government have been making videos of the carnival celebrations, panorama, etc.?
Over the years I've gotten a few of them (unofficially, of course). The quality of video is quite good, and with some editing it could have made a viable commercial or promotional product.

As a matter of fact, I've been told that there are over 11,000 such videotapes stored in 500 boxes in the old Angostura Rum Bond in Laventille.

What, may I ask is the purpose of storing these tapes, and not putting them to some use, for example, maybe even sharing them with the public at a minimal cost?

    Dotishness!

    • Yeah, they stopped spinning. If they find a way to put the tapes to good use, we'll be back on the axis again.

  • Claude, Soca Monarch is in a fight with the Govt every year for subvention money (tax payers money) to run their show.

$140M pay-per-view @ USD$5.00  (only guessing) = $$$$$$$$$$$ - You have to understand Trini - they like to SHOO SHOO...

  • Bertel and Jerry: You all can add the 14 MILLION television households in Canada. Then you have to go down to Mexico to come up with the rest of the 140 MILLION. Conceded!!! You have your 140 million TV households in North America!!!

But read her statement again, please. And then get a measure of reality from BUGS above.

    • You are always good at twisting! Remember the dance, the Twist? Yuh good at that!

  • What are the top 10 best selling pay-per view events in history?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100226040519AA7twrb

    1. Oscar De La Hoya- $610.6 million on 12.6 million buys (18 events)
    2. Mike Tyson- $545 million on 12.4 million buys (12 events)
    3. Evander Holyfield- $543 million on 12.6 million buys (14 events)
    4. Manny Pacquiao (only active fighter today who owns 2 payperview sales in the top 10 eve
    5. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (his fights with Ricky Hatton, Marquez, and Oscar were huge)r)
    6. Ricky Hatton (the all time top seller in Britain)
    7. Lennox Lewis (had huge payperview sales in Britain and also in America vs Tyson and Holyfield)
    8. Roy Jones Jr. (his pay-per-view buys were decent)
    9. Bernard Hopkins (has sold well in most of his fights)
    10. Miguel Cotto (Is actually the top Puerto Rican pay-per-view seller of all time who shattered Trinidad's record)

  • It is really silly when we all think loads of people will shell out money to line the pockets of organizers who have no clue of putting on a show.
While in London I paid twenty-eight pounds to view Soca Monarch and for the entire, event they had problems. Last year I was in the actual event and it was such a farce I could not believe it. Most of the contestants were so against Machel they all sang about it in their tunes with no regard for the total competition or the paying public. They all wanted Super Blue to win and I had to ask myself if they were just supporting artist and not contestants in a competition. Think about Kenye West and his rant over Beyoncé and Taylor Swift winning and multiply it by most of the contestants in the Grammys and you get the idea, and that show is free. I have no problem paying for Soca Monarch however I would like to be reassured this will not be a two hour delay in the broadcast and another bottle neck registration for the event. Pricing is always a concern for quality…. Is it all worth it?

    • This is exactly what I meant when I said bottleneck registration. I am talking about 8 years ago we had this problem and we still have the same haphazard approach to carnival broadcast coverage. Three years ago CTV tried to charge for an event they advertised late and the result was they were taken to court to have them refund charges for an event they did not produce adequately. Do not get me wrong…every effort is applauded but much could be done to improve with the money that is made and obtained from the sponsors.

    • Not ready for prime-time...

"Fitzwilliam said tomorrow’s competition will be broadcast through Pay-Per-View to roughly 140 million households in North America."

No name was given as to who will be broadcasting the event, just shows how unprepared they are, most Pay-Per-View events are advertised weeks or months in advance. Making this announcement without giving the name of the content provider a day before this event is another example of our "Juss So" culture.

Here’s an observation made by a well respected columnist...

We have little idea of how bad we are at service. It used to be true that the customer is always right. No longer. Not even when you are putting the money in the trader’s own hand. That oblivion to the customer’s needs is no more exemplified than in the current broadcast media coverage of the Carnival festivities.

I think an attempt was made to improve the Skinner Park calypso competition coverage at the weekend but it remained an unrewarding experience for the viewer. The audio of the presenters was so low as to be inaudible. The two nameless individuals never looked at us, never spoke to us, only to each other. What was the point of them being there?

"Similarly, with the Panorama semis TV coverage. The presenters forgot that viewers weren’t sitting there all day, like they were, to know who had already appeared, how many more bands were to come and in what order. The entire broadcast was done because the channel was supposed to be covering it, a job to get through. I do hope everybody can do a bit better as we move through the Carnival."
