My friend Cecil Hinkson, bless his heart, has been on a campaign to return the steelband to the streets of T&T, and I do support him.
But the question should be asked, do the steelbands really want this?
Because humans hate getting out of their comfort zones, habits are difficult to break, and no one under fourty can relate to the days when steelbands dominated the road at carnival. Their idea of steelband participation in carnival ends with panorama finals, except for as handful of small bands on trucks, and Trinidad All Stars.
And, most young pan players are quite content to learn their "one tune" for panorama.
Would they wish to learn a repertoire of tunes capable of satisfying masqueraders for two days? And put in all that work for panorama?
I wonder!!!
