In honor of Black History Month, a few words in praise of Ellie Mannette, the man who has spent his life in pursuit of the perfect steel pan.
It began in Trinidad and Tobago at the turn of the century. The use of traditional African percussion instruments had been banned because of political unrest. The human musical soul, however, is not so easily repressed.
The Toledo School for the Arts has planned an amazing event for this upcoming weekend. Three steel pan bands from various parts of Ohio are teaming up for a Steel Band Smash.
The Miami University Steel Band, the Bowling Green State University Steel Band, and Toledo’s own Glass City Steel from the TSA will each perform separately. The evening will conclude with a ‘mass band’ of all three jamming together.
