EGG HARBOR – Hear the unmistakable sound of a steel pan, aka steel drum, and you must be listening to music of the Caribbean or South Pacific, right?
Not necessarily so, says Liam Teague, and he plans to show how and why when he opens the Fall Concert Series on Saturday at Birch Creek Music Performance Center.
Teague should know. He's a 23-year faculty member and current director of the steel band program at Birch Creek Music Performance Center, the summer academy for high school-age, gifted music students in Egg Harbor. He's also a professor of music and the head of steel pan studies at Northern Ilinois University, where he's been since he became a student there in 1993.
