  • Dont agreed with odw, sorry! Using management principles of business in a cultural or any other organization is beneficial to all people involved: the workers, the community etc.. What do businesses want? not gains? All organizations: cultural, religious, social, family should then organise to operate towards gains. They are handling money like a business; they are catering to customers' needs, like a business; they have workers like a business. If we allow cultural organizations to go along willy nilly we are just encouraging chaos, failures, weaknesses and loss of the focus. Pan yards should run like a business! Pannists' organizations should run like a business! And the overarching body should be the greatest of the businesses of them all. Once you organize to reflect the framework of :business you are to run like a business. Why Board and President then if you are not a business..

      My experiences serving as part of a management team in a business organization meeting requirements that were needed to effectively  perform the job, involved specific training in Leadership, Supervisory, Diversity, Motivating others,  Delegating authority and Decision-making.  Being customer service driven was the number one priority within the organizational structure and serving its user communities both regional (15) East Coast States including its home state. Performing employee evaluations were based on the core principles found in the Mission Statement, their Attendance, Judgement, Job Knowledge, Team-work, Punctuality, Initiative and Training needs.

       All those dynamics in management principles you mentioned were at play in the day to day operations of the job functions, including researching and developing new approaches to problem solving and creating new standards of operations. The key factors that contributed to the company’s success as a leader in its industry were done by monitoring processes, its employee’s relations, documented observations, studies and changing as needed.

  • PAN and CALYPSO will NEVER DIE in TRINIDAD and TOBAGO.

    PAN has a POLITICAL PROBLEM in TRINIDAD and that problem is how to get LEADERS with ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS coupled with an understanding of the GLOBAL EXPLOSION of the instrument --  to jump in and TAKE CHARGE in an attempt to STIMULATE PROGRESS ... and we all have different definitions of what "PROGRESS" means!!!

    But PAN PROGRESS is not buried in the bosom of PAN TRINBAGO. The BRAIN POWER that spends so much time pontificating about the PERIL OF PAN with an unending flow of articles -- why don't they switch lanes and start putting THEORY into PRACTICE.

    • Maybe some are getting confused with the terms being used here, Pan Trinbago is a cultural organization, not a business organization. In a business you have a PLAN, the management team hired will have the skill-sets that's going to shape the company's mission/direction, their product, their customer base and quality of service.

      Trying to fit a square peg in a round hole is not going to work...

      Pan Trinbago is a cultural organization which was incorporated by Act of Parliament, 5 of 1986. It formerly operated and was registered as a Union representing the interest of steelpan players. The general membership of the steelband Movement decided that it would better serve their interests in the development and promotion of the steelband, to become incorporated by an Act of Parliament here in Trinidad and Tobago, the birth place of the steelband and the main center for the propagation of this art form.

    • Ayesha, you ask a good question. I've always blamed the past Governments for not seeing this as a vital part of our culture that needs putting some of our brilliant minds to develop.

      • Cecil, I feel cheated as a citizen, who have been brought up to respect and support our culture, that I have not yet seen a Leadership Vision of Culture. Everything that is done seems, to me, to be window dressing, or haphazard, after all these years. As you know, all we need is the highest level to air and compound that Vision, which has to be like a millennium goal, pulled together from experience, thought, and feed from communities. Then people can group to work, each going towards aspects of it independently to make it unfold and materialise.

After promises of more prize money from the government of Trinidad & Tobago were not met, Smith led the boycott of the Panorama competition in 1979 while serving as the Acting President of the steelband governing body, Pan Trinbago. He served as President of Pan Trinbago from 1980 to 1988 and was largely credited with reinstituting the biennial Steelband Music Festival in 1980 after eight years of no competition. He was heavily involved with the furtherance of the steelband in Trinidad & Tobago and internationally, and was instrumental in its adoption as the Caribbean's musical instrument. He served as a senator in the Assembly of Trinidad & Tobago from the 1990s until his untimely death in 2003. In recognition of his contribution to the organization of steelbands in Trinidad & Tobago, the winner of the 2004 Panorama competition was awarded the the Arnim Smith Memorial Challenge Trophy by Pan Trinbago.
